Ferrari\u2019s Fernando Alonso arrived as overwhelming favourite that day but a poor strategy call left him mired in the midfield and handed a first world title to Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Bull RB6 was the class of the field and Vettel a worthy champion \u2013\u00a010\u00a0pole positions and five victories (including\u00a0winning\u00a0the last two rounds) were just enough to crown the youngest champion to date. However, poor reliability and an increasingly terse relationship with team-mate Mark Webber also characterised his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Red Bulls\u00a0clashed in Turkey as Vettel moved for the lead and\u00a0the parent company\u2019s perceived favouritism for the German soured Webber\u2019s mood despite four victories of his own. A crash during the inaugural Korean GP lost Webber the championship lead and ultimately proved fatal to his cause. This was to be as close as the Australian would come to the title. He also survived a frightening 160\u00a0mph\u00a0end-over-end crash\u00a0at Valencia after being launched while lapping\u00a0Heikki\u00a0Kovalainen.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Alonso\u00a0inherited victory\u00a0after Vettel retired\u00a0in\u00a0Bahrain on his debut for Ferrari but his challenge initially faded as the team introduced a (Red Bull-copy) exhaust blown diffuser and (McLaren-copy) \u201cf-duct\u201d. Already 47 points behind by Silverstone, Alonso\u2019s German victory next time out was thanks to Felipe Massa accepting team orders despite that\u00a0practice being\u00a0officially\u00a0banned. A run of another\u00a0three wins in four\u00a0races\u00a0handed Alonso a last-race\u00a0points\u00a0advantage that he ultimately could not convert when\u00a0stuck behind\u00a0Vitaly\u00a0Petrov\u2019s\u00a0Renault.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren\u2019s aforementioned \u201cf-duct\u201d allowed the driver to manually reduce drag on the straights by covering a vent. Innovative though it was, it was outlawed after just a season.\u00a0World Champion\u00a0Jenson Button made the surprise move to partner Lewis Hamilton\u00a0in\u00a0the team. Many questioned the wisdom of going head-to-head with F1\u2019s fastest driver\u00a0in what was thought to be his private domain. Two victories in the first four races helped vindicate\u00a0Button\u2019s\u00a0decision. Hamilton starred once more to lead the championship before incidents at Monza and Singapore dented his hopes.<\/p>\n<p>Reigning champions\u00a0Brawn GP were acquired by, and re-branded as, Mercedes-Benz although there would be no repeat of the previous season\u2019s heroics. Ross Brawn tempted Michael Schumacher out of retirement but he failed to sparkle against F1\u2019s new generation or team-mate\u00a0Nico\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0\u2013 being out-qualified 15-4.<\/p>\n<p>Renault was acquired by Genii Capital and Robert\u00a0Kubica\u2019s\u00a0three podium finishes (including second in Australia) further enhanced his reputation as a future star.\u00a0Petrov\u00a0clashed with Schumacher on a couple of occasions but his major contribution was holding off Alonso to hand Vettel the title.<\/p>\n<p>Both Toyota and BMW had withdrawn from F1 and the latter handed its team back to Peter\u00a0Sauber.\u00a0A supply of Ferrari engines was hastily arranged and Toyota-refugee\u00a0Kamui\u00a0Kobayashi emerged as the category\u2019s most fearless over\u00a0taker. Rubens\u00a0Barrichello\u00a0joined\u00a0Williams-Cosworth\u00a0and became the first driver to start over 300 GPs. Team-mate\u00a0Nico\u00a0Hulkenberg\u00a0impressed during his rookie campaign, including qualifying\u00a0for the Brazilian GP\u00a0in a surprise pole position.<\/p>\n<p>Three new\u00a0Cosworth-powered\u00a0teams were lured into\u00a0Formula 1\u00a0on\u00a0the promise of resource restrictions which\u00a0were\u00a0never\u00a0introduced. Lotus (later Caterham), Virgin (soon to be\u00a0Marussia) and Hispania Racing Team (formerly Campos) all struggled and it was four seasons before any of them scored a point.\u00a0They had all closed their doors by the end of 2014\u00a0although\u00a0Marussia\u00a0returned as Manor Grand Prix at the start of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from blown exhausts and the \u201cf-duct,\u201d the teams agreed to
