The Brackley-based team was reborn as Brawn Grand Prix and with a supply of Mercedes-Benz engines, confirming its participation just 23 days before the start of the new season. Designed around the controversial \u201cdouble diffuser\u201d concept, the Brawn BGP001 immediately proved to be a class apart.<\/p>\n<p>Jenson Button won six of the first seven races\u00a0to take a stranglehold on\u00a0the title. He survived a mid-season dip in form to storm through the field in Brazil to clinch the World Championship with a round to spare. Rubens\u00a0Barrichello\u00a0was originally outpaced by his team-mate but he grew stronger as the year unfolded and won\u00a0at\u00a0both Valencia and Monza as he finished third overall.<\/p>\n<p>This was the year that Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull truly came of age. Once pronounced legal by the FIA, Adrian\u00a0Newey\u00a0introduced his own interpretation of the \u201cdouble diffuser\u201d and the RB5 was more than a match for Brawn by the British GP. Vettel won four times as he finished as runner-up to Button. Team-mate Mark Webber\u2019s\u00a0year\u00a0began with a broken\u00a0leg\u00a0sustained\u00a0in a\u00a0Tasmanian\u00a0charity cycle ride. That curtailed his pre-season testing but he scored first GP victories in Germany (despite a drive through penalty) and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis Hamilton\u2019s title defence began with disqualification from third\u00a0place in the Australian GP after he was found to have lied to the stewards.\u00a0The McLaren MP4-24 was a difficult car\u00a0so\u00a0it is to Hamilton\u2019s credit that he won twice\u00a0to finish\u00a0fifth\u00a0in the standings. In contrast,\u00a0Heikki\u00a0Kovalainen\u00a0was a disappointing 12th\u00a0overall\u00a0in his second and final season with the team.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari only won once (Kimi\u00a0Raikkonen\u00a0in Belgium) and Felipe Massa suffered serious head injuries during qualifying for the Hungarian GP. A spring from\u00a0Barrichello\u2019s\u00a0Brawn hit Massa on the helmet and he was sidelined for the rest of the year. Luca\u00a0Badoer\u00a0and then Giancarlo\u00a0Fisichella\u00a0both proved uncompetitive while deputising for the Brazilian.\u00a0Fisichella\u00a0was briefly a sought after driver once more after converting a surprise pole position at Spa-Francorchamps\u00a0into second\u00a0place at the finish\u00a0for Force India. Adrian\u00a0Sutil\u00a0showed the team\u2019s genuine improvement\u00a0by\u00a0qualifying\u00a0on the front row next time out in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Controversy enveloped Renault after the disappointing Nelson Piquet\u00a0jr\u00a0was replaced mid-season. It soon emerged that the disaffected\u00a0Brazilian\u00a0had deliberately crashed\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a02008\u00a0Singapore GP, thus handing a winning advantage\u00a0to team-mate Fernando Alonso. Both\u00a0Flavio\u00a0Briatore\u00a0and Pat Symonds were banned from F1 as a consequence. Alonso, who was formally cleared of all knowledge of the incident, finished third in Singapore and did enough to earn a Ferrari contract for 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Nick\u00a0Heidfeld\u00a0and Robert\u00a0Kubica\u00a0scored a second\u00a0place finish apiece for BMW\u00a0Sauber, as\u00a0did\u00a0Toyota\u2019s\u00a0Jarno\u00a0Trulli\u00a0and\u00a0Timo\u00a0Glock. However, but both manufacturers quit F1 at the end of the season. Jaime\u00a0Alguersuari\u00a0became F1\u2019s youngest driver to date when he made his debut for Toro\u00a0Rosso\u00a0in Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>Max Mosley\u00a0was succeeded\u00a0as President of the
