Needing to finish fifth in Brazilian rain, Hamilton recovered from a late change to wet tyres to pass Timo Glock on the final corner to take that position and clinch the title by a single point.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren\u2019s young\u00a0protege\u2019s\u00a0five victories included the Monaco GP (despite hitting the barrier) and dominating in the wet at Silverstone. He also won the Belgian GP on the road but was controversially penalised 25 seconds for cutting the chicane when most thought he had done nothing wrong. However, there were erratic moments such as crashing into\u00a0Kimi\u00a0Raikkonen\u2019s\u00a0Ferrari in the Canadian\u00a0pitlane\u00a0and a wild\u00a0first corner\u00a0lunge at Fuji.<\/p>\n<p>Raikkonen\u00a0won\u00a0two of the opening four races\u00a0to\u00a0lead the championship but his title defence was underwhelming thereafter\u00a0\u2013 the Finn eventually fading to third overall. Instead, it was Felipe\u00a0Massa who led\u00a0Ferrari\u2019s challenge. He won six times and only lost in Hungary and Singapore due to a late engine failure and botched pitstop respectively.\u00a0Victory\u00a0in Brazil seemed to have\u00a0snatched\u00a0the\u00a0title\u00a0before Hamilton\u2019s late\u00a0heroics.<\/p>\n<p>Heikki\u00a0Kovalainen\u00a0replaced Fernando Alonso at McLaren but finished a disappointing seventh overall. That included\u00a0a frightening crash in Spain and inheriting victory in Hungary when Massa retired with\u00a0just\u00a0three laps to go.\u00a0Kovalainen\u00a0also qualified on pole position at Silverstone and\u00a0perhaps\u00a0should\u00a0have\u00a0converted another front row start at Monza into victory.<\/p>\n<p>BMW\u00a0Sauber\u00a0emerged as genuine challengers and the highly rated Robert\u00a0Kubica\u00a0led Nick\u00a0Heidfeld\u00a0in a\u00a0Canadian\u00a01-2 for the team.\u00a0Kubica\u00a0excelled and may have sustained a championship\u00a0campaign\u00a0if the team had not switched development focus to 2009\u00a0before the end of\u00a0the season.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso returned to Renault following his unhappy season at McLaren. It was a difficult campaign before the Spaniard scored back-to-back wins in Singapore\u00a0(F1\u2019s first night race)\u00a0and Japan.\u00a0He only started 15th for the former\u00a0and\u00a0benefited from a safety car triggered when rookie team-mate Nelson Piquet\u00a0jr\u00a0crashed. What would become known\u00a0as &#8220;Crashgate&#8221; would come to light mid-way through 2009. Piquet struggled\u00a0although he did score a surprise second\u00a0place finish in Germany thanks to a one-stop strategy and mid-race safety car.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Webber\u2019s Red Bull\u00a0qualified on the front row at Silverstone before\u00a0he crashed\u00a0on the opening lap. It was team-mate David\u00a0Coulthard, in his last season before retirement, who scored\u00a0the team\u2019s best result when third in Canada.\u00a0Sebastian Vettel\u00a0remained with the sister\u00a0Scuderia\u00a0Toro\u00a0Rosso\u00a0for\u00a0his first full Formula 1 season and scored a sensational win\u00a0from pole position\u00a0in the wet Italian GP.<\/p>\n<p>GP2 champion\u00a0Timo\u00a0Glock\u00a0joined Toyota and matched the team\u2019s best result by finishing second in Hungary. Ross Brawn returned from sabbatical\u00a0as\u00a0Honda Team Principal and began reorganising the\u00a0underperforming team.\u00a0They soon abandoned development of the current car to concentrate on 2009 and Rubens\u00a0Barrichello\u00a0scored its only podium when third at Silverstone.\u00a0However, with the global economy in recession, Honda announced it was withdrawing at the end of the season\u00a0to put\u00a0the F1 futures of\u00a0Barrichello, Jenson Button and the entire team in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>Nico\u00a0Rosberg\u2019s\u00a0Williams-Toyota was third in Australia\u00a0and\u00a0he finished in a fine second-place in Singapore, only losing\u00a0victory\u00a0due to\u00a0the untimely deployment of the safety car.\u00a0Super\u00a0Aguri\u00a0closed its doors after the Spanish GP and Force India \u2013 the fourth identity for Eddie Jordan\u2019s former team in as\u00a0many years \u2013 failed to score a point.
