So long championship leader, that year\u2019s British hero lost a three-way title decider and his Grand Prix ambitions were fatally wounded that day.<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Upbringing and early career<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">His father was an amateur driver who owned an Ulster brickworks. The young Kenny followed him into the sport and showed prodigious talent in Formula Ford 1600 \u2013 making his debut in 1976 and winning the Irish title a year later. Acheson dominated the 1978 British\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">FF1600\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Championships with a works Royale RP24 and won 29 times to clinch all three titles. His potential was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">recognised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grovewood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Award for the most promising young Commonwealth talent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Long-term sponsor RMC funded two seasons in British F3 and Acheson was promising in his rookie year. He was then on the verge of the 1980 title in Murray Taylor Racing\u2019s March-Toyota but Acheson could not hold off Stefan Johansson\u2019s late charge. He spun during the final round at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Thruxton<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and second\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">equal with Roberto Guerrero was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ultimately a disappointment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Acheson entered F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ormula\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2 as Johansson\u2019s 1981 team-mate at DS Team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Toleman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. His year was marred by a leg-breaking accident at Pau just as he started to show his form at that level. Barely recovered, Acheson finished a brave third when he returned at the final round at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mantorp<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Park. He continued in the category with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ralt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-Honda in 1982 and Maurer a year later. Seventh in 1982 was his best year in F2 with a couple of second-place finishes as close as he came to victory.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Formula 1 at the wrong end of the\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">pitlane<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He did make the move to F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ormula\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1 in the middle of 1983 with the uncompetitive RAM team but it was an unhappy experience. He qualified just once to make his debut in South Africa. Another half season for the team in 1985 was equally depressing. Drafted in after Manfred\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Winkelhock<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0was killed, Acheson only qualified twice. He made a one-off Champ C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ar appearance at the 1984 Meadowlands race and raced in Japan soon after \u2013 winning the 1987 Japanese\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sportscar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Championship with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kunimitsu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Takahashi and Alpha\u2019s Porsche 962.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:288}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">His breakthrough on the international stage was with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sauber<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-Mercedes in the 1989<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">World\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sportscar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Championship. The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sauber<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0C9\/88-Mercedes he shared with Mauro\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Baldi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0won at Brands Hatch and Spa-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Francorchamps<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and was second at Le Mans (with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gianfranco\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brancatelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0also driving) \u2013 the highlights of his racing career.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Third in the 1991 Le Mans 24 H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ours for Jaguar and second once more a year later with Toyota, he retired from the sport after crashing a Lister St<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">orm during the 1996 Daytona 24 H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ours.<\/span><span
