Motor racing was Alboreto\u2019s life. Supremely popular amongst his peers, who respected his skill and the way he went about the business, he loved the sport\u2019s history and grew up spectating at nearby Monza. He watched Jackie Stewart win a slipstreaming thriller in the 1969 Italian Grand Prix as a 12-year-old. Ronnie Peterson was his hero and Alboreto\u2019s helmet carried the Swedish national colours.rnrn<strong>Formula 3 champion and race winner in F2 and sports cars\u00a0<\/strong>rnrnHe started racing in Formula Monza in 1976 and soon came to prominence in Formula 3. Runner-up in the 1979 Italian Championship, he won the European title for\u00a0Euroracing\u00a0and March-Alfa Romeo a year later. The young Italian also raced for the Lancia sports car team in 1980 and he finished second on three occasions when sharing a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo with more experienced drivers such as\u202fEddie Cheever and rally legend Walter\u00a0R\u00f6hrl.rnAlboreto\u00a0dovetailed that Lancia programme with European Formula 2 for\u00a0Minardi\u00a0in 1981 and he scored first victories in both categories. But he was involved in the accident at the Pau F2 race which left Kenny Acheson with serious leg injuries.rnrn<strong>Formula 1 delivers a famous team&#8217;s final victories\u00a0<\/strong>rnrnBy then he was also a full-time Formula 1 driver as he graduated with\u00a0Tyrrell\u00a0in the 1981 San Marino GP. In a transitional era between normally-aspirated to turbocharged engines,\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0and\u00a0Tyrrell\u00a0used the venerable Ford\u00a0Cosworth\u00a0DFV during its final seasons.rnOut-powered by the newer but less reliable turbos,\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0took his opportunities when they came. Notable was the final race of 1982. With all eyes in Las Vegas on the title battle between\u00a0Keke\u00a0Rosberg\u00a0and John Watson,\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0scored a maiden victory when the leading Renaults failed once more. Another followed in Detroit a year later in what was\u00a0Tyrrell\u2019s\u00a023rd and the DFV engine\u2019s 155th victory in final successes for two motor racing legends.rnrn<strong>Championship challenger with Ferrari\u00a0<\/strong>rnrnThat earned\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0the call from Ferrari for 1984 and he won the Belgian GP in his first year with the team, although the questionable reliability of his Ferrari 126C4 hindered his cause. Outpaced by Alain\u00a0Prost\u00a0and McLaren on occasion during 1985, there were days when\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0was inspired. He mounted a year-long championship challenge for the world title and won twice. But crucial mechanical failures ultimately robbed\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0and he finished runner-up behind the Frenchman. Unknown at the time,\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0was at the height of his success and he would not add to his five F1 wins. He left Ferrari after a frustrating 1988 with Enzo dead and team management wanting new blood to reignite the team.rnrn<strong>Formula 1 decline and subsequent career\u00a0<\/strong>rnrnAlboreto\u00a0briefly returned to\u00a0Tyrrell\u00a0and was third in Mexico but his career was now in inexorable decline. Seasons with\u00a0Larrousse, Arrows,\u00a0Scuderia\u00a0Italia and\u00a0Minardi\u00a0followed \u2013 the hopes of victory gone but\u00a0Alboreto\u2019s\u00a0love of the sport would not allow him\u202fto retire.rnrnHaving driven his final GP (Australia 1994),\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0moved to the new Indy Racing League in 1996 \u2013 retiring early at Indianapolis but finishing on the podium in New Hampshire. He settled in sports cars and won the Le Mans 24 Hours\u00a0for\u00a0Joest\u00a0and Porsche in 1997 on his fifth appearance in the classic.rnrnHe was part of\u00a0Joest\u2019s\u00a0new Audi team for 2000 at the beginning of a programme that would eventually dominate endurance racing. Third at Le Mans was followed by victory in Road Atlanta\u2019s Petit Le Mans. He then opened 2001 by winning the Sebring 12 hours with\u00a0Dindo\u00a0Capello\u00a0and Laurent\u00a0A\u00efello.rnrnBut\u00a0Alboreto\u00a0was lost a month later when preparing for Le Mans on the\u00a0Lausitzring\u00a0test track. He suffered a left-rear puncture at over 200mph and his car flipped over the barriers. He was killed instantly.
