The 5ft3in Italian immigrant was an aggressive racer who remained at the top of his profession for over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alvise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had run several farms near to Trieste but the family\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lost everything when communist rule was imposed after World War II.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Time in a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">refugee camp<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was followed by a move to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lucca in Italy\u2019s Tuscan region<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They lived opposite a garage<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">early interest in cars and motor racing was established through friendship with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">owner. Mario and twin brother Aldo were spectators at the 1954 Italian Grand Prix but were disappointed when their hero Alberto\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0retired from the lead. The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0family<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0immigrated to America a year later<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and settled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Nazareth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Pennsylvania to be close to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an uncle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The brothers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">saved enough money to buy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1948\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hudson\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with which they were soon winning local events. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aldo\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was left in a coma after he crashed at Hatfield and he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quit after\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">another accident<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In contrast, Mario progressed to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">URC\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sprint cars and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ARDC\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">midgets as soon as he turned 21 years old.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Working as a mechanic at the time, Andretti grew so successful that he decided to concentrate on racing as a career.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He stepped up to USAC competition in 1964 \u2013 racing in both sprint cars and the National Championship that year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0spun\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Doug\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stearly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Elder-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Offenhauser<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at Trenton on his debut in the latter but he was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drafted into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Dean Van Lines team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when Chuck\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was injured<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Andretti qualified fourth and finished in a fine third position when beaten by just Jim Clark and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Jones. Victory in the Hoosier Grand Prix followed at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impressive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rookie clinched the National Championship with another 10 top five finishes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti began his title defence by qualifying on pole position for the opening six races of the 1966 season. That included the Indianapolis 500<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which he led for the opening 16 laps before retiring early. The 26 year old won eight times that season to successfully retain\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">championship<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another eight victories followed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1967\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AJ\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Foyt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0narrowly beat\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at year\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">title. In addition<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Andretti\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was a works Ford driver in selected NASCAR and sports car races that year. He\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">won the Daytona 500\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the former \u2013 lapping all bar Fred\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lorenzen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 and Sebring 12 hours when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sharing a GT40 with Bruce McLaren<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0However, his debut in the Le Mans 24 hours ended during the night when he crashed the second-placed car at The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Esses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Long-time backer Al Dean\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lost his<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0long battle against cancer in December 1967\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">so\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reluctantly turned car owner. He\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acquired the Dean Van Lines team\u2019s equipment, hired\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brawner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and formed his own team for the 1968 USAC season. By his own high standards, it was a disappointing campaign although he did win four times and finish as runner-up to Bobby Unser. Both Unser and Andretti were entered in that year\u2019s Italian GP for BRM and Lotus respectively. However, neither was allowed to race as they had competed in the previous day\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0event at Indiana State Fair<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grounds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0There was no such clash with the United States GP and Andretti stunned the F1 fraternity by qualifying his Lotus 49B-Ford on pole position \u2013 becoming the first debutant to do so since the World Championship had begun.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During 1969, Andretti started three GPs for Lotus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">although<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0regaining the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0title remained his primary focus. He sold his team to Andy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Granatelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the STP Corporation and finally tasted the winner\u2019s milk at Indianapolis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 finishing almost two minutes ahead of Dan Gurney\u2019s Eagle-Ford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That was one of nine victories as Andretti clinched the third championship in five years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brawner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and respected mechanic Jim McGee left the team at the end of the season\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">endured a disappointing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0campaign during<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a01970<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 Castle Rock his only victory in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Granatelli\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0McNamara T500-Ford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also drove a Ferrari 512S in the Daytona and Sebring sports car races<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 winning the later with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ignazio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giunti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and Nino\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vaccarella<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 and started selected GPs with an STP March 701-Ford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A lapped t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hird\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">after a race of attrition in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was his only finish in five GP starts\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during 1970<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He joined Ferrari\u2019s F1 team at the start of 1971 after\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giunti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was killed during the Buenos Aires 1000Kms \u2013 a singular honour for any driver raised in Italy. His season began in spectacular style with Andretti winning the opening round in South Africa \u2013 his maiden GP victory \u2013 and the non-championship race at California\u2019s Ontario Motor Speedway. He was fourth in the German GP but only started five GPs as another\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0season with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Granatelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and STP took precedence. However, his McNamara-Ford proved troublesome and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0left the team after his first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">winless\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indycar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0campaign since 1964.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti joined\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Al Unser and Joe Leonard in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Jones\u2019s \u201csuper<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a01972<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0while also racing for Ferrari in selected F1 and sports car races when his schedule allowed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, while Leonard retained the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">USAC<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0title<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andretti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could finish no higher than second at Phoenix. Fourth in that year\u2019s South African GP<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0he enjoyed better fortune when sharing a Ferrari\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">312PB with Jacky\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ickx<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They won<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at Daytona, Sebring, Brands Hatch and Watkins Glen\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as Ferrari secured\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the World Championship of Makes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next two seasons with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0included victory in the 1973 Trenton 300 as he finished fifth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the final USAC standings. He won the following year\u2019s USAC dirt track title on his return to that form of racing and finished as runner-up in the 1974 and 1975 North American Formula 5000 Championship when driving\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Lola T332-Chevrolet.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It was not that Andretti had forgotten about F1 for he gave the new\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0VPJ4-Ford its GP debut in the final two races of 1974. Third on the grid for the US GP, the combination showed glimpses of real promise during 1975. Andretti led the Spanish GP (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as well as setting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the race\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fastest lap) and was fourth in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Swedish GP\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and fifth in France<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the one-car team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Already frustrated by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parnelli\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0lack of focus on F1, Andretti finished sixth in the 1976 South African GP but was without a drive when the team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">suddenly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">withdrew.
