Despite that tragedy, his son Alberto followed him into motor racing and this early second generation star won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1952-f1-world-championship\/\">1952<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1953-f1-world-championship\/\">1953 World Championship<\/a> during a period of rare domination for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a>. However, his life would also be cut short at the same age as his father \u2013 prompting thoughts of a tragic symmetry to their lives.<\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Family background and early racing career<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Seven years old when his father died, Alberto\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raced Bianchi motorcycles from 1937 before switching to cars at the 1940 Mille\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Miglia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. That was sharing an Auto\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Costruzioni<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tipo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0815 (the first car to be built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/enzo-ferrari\/\">Enzo Ferrari<\/a>) with his cousin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/giovanni-minozzi\/\">Giovanni\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minozzi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He was recommended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/maserati\/\">Maserati<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/luigi-villoresi\/\">Luigi\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Villoresi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who would act as his mentor\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the coming years.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scuderia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Ambrosiana Maserati 4CLT\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">finished fifth\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in that year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1947-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italian Grand Prix<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the race\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">held on a street circuit in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/milan\/\">Milan<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/monza\/\">Monza<\/a> was restored after th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e conflict.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grand Prix driver with Maserati and Alfa Romeo<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maserati introduced the upgraded 4CLT\/48 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/san-remo\/\">San Remo<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at the start of the 1948 season.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0led\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Villoresi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a 1-2 for the team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the car\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thereafter\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">known colloquially as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the \u201cSan Remo\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That success led to a one-off appearance with the all-conquering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/alfa-romeo\/\">Alfa Romeo<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1948-french-grand-prix\/\">French GP<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/reims\/\">Reims<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0finished third behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jean-pierre-wimille\/\">Jean-Pierre\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wimille<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/consalvo-sanesi\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consalvo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sanesi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on another dominant day for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alfettas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d. Their first appearance of the season was at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/spa-francorchamps\/\">Spa-<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/spa-francorchamps\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Francorchamps<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1949-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgian GP<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the supercharged Ferrari 125<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s were beaten by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/louis-rosier\/\">Louis Rosier<\/a>&#8216;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more fuel-efficient Lago-Talbot with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Villoresi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0finishing second and third respectively. They soon made amends with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0winning the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1949-swiss-grand-prix\/\">Swiss GP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1949-international-trophy\/\">International Trophy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1949-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italian GP<\/a> in quick succession.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new F1 World Championship was introduced in 1950 with Ferrari joining the fray at the second round on the streets of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1950-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monte Carlo<\/a>.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0A freak gust of wind bl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w water onto the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tabac<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0corner as the field approached for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was one of those to avoid the ensuing chaos and he eventually finished a distant second behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/juan-manuel-fangio\/\">Juan Manuel Fangio<\/a>\u2019s Alfa Romeo. Realising that normally aspirated engines were the future, Ferrari spent 1950 developing its new contender and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0took over\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/dorino-serafini\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorino<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Serafini\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0375 to finish second in the Italian GP. Alfa Romeo rema<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ined the team to beat once the w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orld\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hampionship got underway a week later in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1951-swiss-grand-prix\/\">Switzerland<\/a>. More significant was the lack of quality opposition and race organisers hastily switched to F2 rules. Early victories at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/syracuse-sicily\/\">Syracuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/pau\/\">Pau<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/marseille\/\">Marseille<\/a> showed that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the F2 Ferrari 500 were championship favourites\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nonetheless\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">although he elected to miss the opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1952-swiss-grand-prix\/\">Swiss GP<\/a>. That was to race in the lucrative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1952-indianapolis-500-2\/\">Indianapolis 500<\/a> instead \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0qualified his Ferrari 375 in 19th position and was running eighth before the loss of a wheel sent him spinning out of the race in Turn Four.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ascari<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0returned to Europe for a season of rare domination. The Lancia shot through the straw bales and into the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harbour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0below. He escaped with just a cut nose and was testing a Ferrari 750 Monza just four days later<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in preparation for the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supercortemaggiore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sports car race<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
