His Formula 1 opportunities were limited to just nine Grand Prix starts but he excelled in endurance racing \u2013 twice world champion and a five-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Formula 2 success and Grand Prix debut for Ferrari<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bell was born in Middlesex but he had settled in the Sussex seaside town of Pagham by the time he started racing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/lotus\/\">Lotus<\/a> Seven in 1964. That was with the encouragement of his step-father and under the Church Farm Racing banner that referred to their home. Formula 3 followed before Bell starred in Formula 2 during 1968 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/brabham\/\">Brabham<\/a> BT23C-Ford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Third place at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/thruxton\/\">Thruxton<\/a> helped attract <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a>\u2019s attention and he signed a contract with the <i>Scuderia<\/i> in July. He qualified on pole position for the F2 Monza Lotteria although his spin on lap 23 triggered a multi-car accident. He ended his 1968 F2 campaign by qualifying on pole position at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/zandvoort\/\">Zandvoort<\/a> and finishing third at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/hockenheim\/\">Hockenheim<\/a> in a Ferrari 166. He also made two GP starts for the Italian team that autumn. He was runner-up in the 1970 European F2 Championship after a season behind the wheel of Tom Wheatcroft\u2019s Brabham BT30-Ford. That included winning the third round at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/montjuich-park\/\">Montjuich Park<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bell made his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1970-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans<\/a> debut in 1970 but he retired his Ferrari 512S after over-revving the engine as cars crashed all around him. He finished sixth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1970-united-states-grand-prix\/\">1970 United States GP<\/a> on a one-off with a works <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/surtees\/\">Surtees TS7-Ford<\/a> but further GP outings with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/tecno-racing-team\/\">Tecno<\/a> and Surtees during the coming years included more DNQs than starts. His final attempt to make the field at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1974-canadian-grand-prix\/\">1974 Canadian GP<\/a> ended in another failure to qualify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Sports car success<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, the Englishman was already making his name in sports cars. He drove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/john-wyer-automotive-engineering\/\">John Wyer<\/a>\u2019s Gulf-sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/porsche\/\">Porsche<\/a> 917K in 1971 and won on his debut at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1971-buenos-aires-1000kms\/\">Buenos Aires<\/a>. He remained with the team for the next few seasons and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/?s=1975+Le+Mans+24+Hours&amp;type=database&amp;v=79cba1185463\">1975 Le Mans 24 Hours<\/a> provided Bell\u2019s highest profile success to date when sharing the winning Gulf GR8-Ford with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jacky-ickx\/\">Jacky Ickx<\/a>. That was his only race for Mirage that year but Bell also won three times with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/willi-kauhsen-racing-team\/\">Willi Kauhsen<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/alfa-romeo\/\">Alfa Romeo<\/a> T33 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/henri-pescarolo\/\">Henri Pescarolo<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The rest of the 1970s were less successful but Bell\u2019s sports car career really started to take off in 1981. Without a 24-hour test before the event, their Jules-sponsored machine ran faultlessly throughout practice and the race to win by 14 laps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The classic Porsche 956 was introduced for the following season and the Ickx\/Bell partnership led the Rothmans-backed team. They were the class of the field in 1982 and won at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/?s=1982+Le+Mans&amp;type=database&amp;v=79cba1185463\">Le Mans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1982-brands-hatch-1000kms\/\">Brands Hatch<\/a> with Ickx crowned World Champion and Bell third in the standings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Separated for 1983 (except at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans<\/a> where they finished second), Ickx and Bell fought out a year-long battle for the world championship which the Belgian won by a scant three points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>World Sportscar Champion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was when Bell was first paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/hans-joachim-stuck\/\">Hans-Joachim Stuck<\/a> in 1985 that he took centre stage in the team \u2013 sharing that year\u2019s world championship with the German and repeating that success in 1986 on his own. They also won the Le Mans 24 Hours in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1986-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1986<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1987-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1987<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/al-holbert\/\">Al Holbert<\/a> as co-driver on both occasions, to confirm their dominance at that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Porsche reduced its works commitment to sports cars from the late 1980s but Bell continued with privateer 962s in both the world championship and North America\u2019s IMSA series. Three victories in the Daytona 24 Hours (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1986-daytona-24-hours\/\">1986<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1987-daytona-24-hours\/\">1987<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1989-daytona-24-hours\/\">1989<\/a>) were the highlights in the latter series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He finished third in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1995-le-mans-24-hours\/\">1995 Le Mans 24<\/a> hours when sharing a Harrods McLaren F1-GTR-BMW with his son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/justin-bell\/\">Justin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/andy-wallace\/\">Andy Wallace<\/a>. His 26th and final appearance a year later yielded his 19th finish in a glittering career at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1995-le-mans-24-hours\">Le Mans<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now living in Sussex and Florida, Bell remains active in historic racing festivals.
