racing world to the core. Twice World Champion and winner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1965-indianapolis-500\/\">1965 Indianapolis 500<\/a>, this quietly spoken and reserved Scot was revered on both sides of the Atlantic. But for his untimely death in an unexplained accident during Hockenheim\u2019s Formula 2 race, Clark may well have won another couple of titles or more. \u201cWhat can I or anyone else say,\u201d wrote Denis Jenkinson in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/archive\/issues\/may-1968\/?v=79cba1185463\">May 1968 issue of <em>Motor Sport<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cMere words are inadequate to express our feelings.\u201d The sport had lost one of its greatest-ever stars.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Early life and introduction to racing\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For all his success on the track and resulting life as a tax exile, Clark was somewhat shy and was happier on the family sheep farm in the Scottish Borders than in the public eye. He drove his father\u2019s car there from the age of nine and interest in the sport was only heightened by spectating at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/brands-hatch\/\">Brands Hatch<\/a> while on a visit to the area and watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/giuseppe-farina\/\">Giuseppe Farina<\/a> race at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/charterhall\/\">Charterhall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Without telling his parents of his wish to race, Clark began to compete during the mid-1950s and began to enjoy some regional success at the end of 1957 when driving Ian Scott-Watson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/porsche\/\">Porsche<\/a> 1600S. He also made his debut at Le Mans when sharing the tenth-placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/lotus\/\">Lotus<\/a> Elite with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/john-whitmore\/\">Sir John Whitmore<\/a>. It was Boxing Day 1959 before Clark first drove a single-seater racing car \u2013 his Gemini finishing eighth in the Formula Junior race \u2013 but he was already regarded as a talent in waiting.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>F1 debut with Lotus<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>He signed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/aston-martin\/\">Aston Martin<\/a> for 1960 but introduction of the front-engine F1 challenger was delayed so Clark made his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1960-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Grand Prix debut with Lotus at Zandvoort<\/a>. Fifth next time out in the Belgian GP, Clark finished third in that year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1960-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans 24 Hours<\/a> when sharing a Border Reivers Aston Martin DBR1\/300 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/roy-salvadori\/\">Roy Salvadori<\/a>. He drove a works Lotus 18-Climax for the balance of the season and excelled in F1, F2 and Formula Junior. He narrowly beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/dan-gurney\/\">Dan Gurney<\/a> in the F2 Kentish 100 at Brands Hatch and was crowned John Davy and Motor Racing British Formula Junior Champion \u2013tying team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/trevor-taylor\/\">Trevor Taylor<\/a> for the latter. He also finished third in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1960-portuguese-grand-prix\/\">Portuguese GP<\/a> as he completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1960-f1-world-championship\/\">fine maiden F1 season eighth in the World Championship.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clark concentrated on F1 during 1961 \u2013 the first season of new 1.5-litre rules. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a> dominated that year but Clark won the non-championship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1961-pau-grand-prix\/\">Pau GP<\/a> and finished third in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1961-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Holland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1961-french-grand-prix\/\">France<\/a> when points were on offer. Fourth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1961-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a>, Clark diced with the Ferrari of championship leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/wolfgang-von-trips\/\">Wolfgang von Trips<\/a> during the opening laps of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1961-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italian GP<\/a>. However, they touched as they approached Parabolica for the second time. Von Trips\u2019s car was launched into the crowd killing the German and 14 spectators. Team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/innes-ireland\/\">Innes Ireland<\/a> won the final race of the year but was released as team owner Colin Chapman invested in Clark\u2019s youthful promise.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"c-content-product content-product content-section\">\n    <div class=\"container\">\n        <div class=\"content-product__grid\">\n            <div class=\"content-product__product\">\n                                    <div\n                        data-behaviour=\"tag-automation\" data-automation-type=\"related-product\"\n                        data-tags=\"[&quot;jim clark&quot;]\" data-current-post=\"22701\">\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"content-product__content user-content\">\n                <p>Undisputed team leader and now armed with the revolutionary monocoque chassis Lotus 25, Clark won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1962-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgian<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1962-british-grand-prix\/\">British<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1962-united-states-grand-prix\/\">United States GPs<\/a> as he challenged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/graham-hill\/\">Graham Hill<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1962-f1-world-championship\/\">1962 World Championship<\/a>. The title decider was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1962-south-african-grand-prix\/\">South African GP<\/a> at East London and the rivals qualified on the front row of the grid. Clark steadily pulled away at the front of the field and was set to clinch a first world title before suffering an oil leak with 20 laps to go.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>World champion in waiting<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Runner-up in the 1962 World Championship, the Scot began his third full F1 season as a firm title favourite. He retired from the lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1963-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monaco<\/a> before racing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1963-indianapolis-500\/\">Indianapolis 500<\/a> for the first time later that week. Clark started America\u2019s richest race from the middle of the front row and remained in contention all day. His Lotus 29-Ford was running second when race leader Parnelli Jones\u2019s Watson-Offenhauser started to leak oil. Chief Steward Harlan Fengler controversially decided not to show Jones the black flag and Clark was forced to be satisfied with an impressive second position. He returned to the series later that year to lead the Milwaukee 200 from start-to-finish \u2013 Jimmy Clark was now a superstar on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Clark made up for his disappointment in Monaco (a race he would never win) to dominate the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1963-f1-world-championship\/\">1963 World Championship<\/a>. He won seven of the remaining nine GPs (finishing on the podium on the other two occasions) and clinched the title with three races to spare.<\/p>\n<p>Clark qualified on pole position for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1964-indianapolis-500\/\">1964 Indianapolis 500<\/a> but was forced to retire when his suspension failed while in the lead. He won three of the opening five GPs of the season but poor reliability hampered his title defence. That year\u2019s British Saloon Car Champion with a Lotus Cortina, Clark entered the final GP of the year in a three-way fight for the title with Graham Hill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/john-surtees\/\">John Surtees<\/a>. He qualified on pole position for that Mexican decider and led with ease to all-but capture back-to-back championship wins. However, his engine was losing oil and it finally expired on the last lap \u2013 thus handing a dramatic World Championship success to Surtees. He qualified in the middle of the front row and led for 190 of the 200 laps as he clinched a famous win. Already winner of the opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1965-south-african-grand-prix\/\">South African GP<\/a>, he returned to Europe and promptly won the next four qualifying rounds to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1965-f1-world-championship\/\">crowned World Champion<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/nurburgring\/\">Nurburgring<\/a> \u2013 again with three races remaining. Most of the season was spent peddling an underpowered 2-litre Lotus 33-Climax but Clark still managed to finish third in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1966-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Holland<\/a>. The complex and ultimately disappointing BRM H16 engine was finally ready by the end of the European season and it held together long enough for Clark to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1966-united-states-grand-prix\/\">United States GP<\/a> \u2013 one of only three points finishes that season.
