That said, and despite a late start to his motor racing career, Damon Hill successfully established himself at the top of the sport \u2013 culminating in that emotional day at Suzuka.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Childhood and early career<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Being Graham Hill\u2019s son was no guarantee of an easy passage within motor racing and that career path seemed unlikely for the young Damon Hill. 15 years old when his father was killed in a light plane accident while returning from testing, that tragedy and subsequent insurance claims cost the family dearly.<\/p>\n<p>Damon Hill initially worked as a motorcycle courier and early competition steps were taken on two wheels, already sporting the same London Rowing Club colours that had adorned his father\u2019s helmet. His first taste of car racing came in 1983 with a course at the famous Winfield Racing School and he switched to British Formula Ford 1600 two years later. Driving a Van Diemen RF85 for Manadient Racing, he managed the inevitable public scrutiny and hype with a calmness that would later characterise his demeanor as Britain\u2019s leading Formula 1 driver. A race winner by the end of the season, Hill finished third in that year\u2019s Esso and fifth in the RAC standings before coming third in the end-of-season Festival at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/brands-hatch\/\">Brands Hatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Formula 3 race winner with Cellnet<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>He signed for the crack West Surrey Racing Formula 3 team in 1986 but team-mate to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/bertrand-fabi\/\">Bertrand Fabi<\/a> was killed while testing at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/goodwood\/\">Goodwood<\/a> before the season. WSR withdrew from the British championship following Fabi\u2019s death so Hill raced Murray Taylor\u2019s Ralt RT30-Volkswagen instead. On pole position for round two at Brands Hatch, his form noticeably improved once the talented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/martin-donnelly\/\">Martin Donnelly<\/a> joined the team from mid-season. Hill scored breakthrough victories on the championship\u2019s overseas excursions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/zandvoort\/\">Zandvoort<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/spa-francorchamps\/\">Spa-Francorchamps<\/a> and was a competitive fifth overall.<\/p>\n<p>That earned another season with the team in the 1988 British F3 Championship with Donnelly his team-mate once more. The Irishman missed the last six races of the season to race in Formula 3000 and Hill had usurped the Irishman for third in the standings by the end of the campaign. Another two F3 wins that year included beating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/gary-brabham\/\">Gary Brabham<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1988-british-grand-prix\/\">British GP<\/a> support race although more had been expected from his third season in the category. He also started the last two F3000 races of the year \u2013 his GA Motorsport Lola T88\/50-Cosworth finishing eighth at Dijon-Prenois.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Formula 3000 revelation and Williams F1 test driver<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Without a single-seater opportunity at the start of 1989, he drove a Richard Lloyd Racing Porsche 962GTi at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1989-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans<\/a>, retiring on his only appearance in the famous 24-hour race. When his next FIA F3000 chance arose a month later, it was replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/ukyo-katayama\/\">Ukyo Katayama<\/a> behind the wheel of the solitary but uncompetitive Footwork MC041-Mugen. He qualified the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/lola\/\">Lola<\/a> T90\/50-Cosworth on pole position for successive races at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/monza\/\">Monza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/enna-pergusa\/\">Enna-Pergusa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/hockenheim\/\">Hockenheim<\/a> only for poor reliability to deny his victory chances. He would have won at Brands Hatch but for a pitstop and second that day was his only meaningful finish of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Bolstered by displays of race-winning pace, Hill moved to Eddie Jordan\u2019s Barclay cigarettes-backed outfit and signed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/williams\/\">Williams<\/a> test driver in 1991. Unfortunately his F3000 campaign was handicapped by his Lola T91\/50-Cosworth being no match for the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/reynard-rd-2\/\">Reynard<\/a> teams. A couple of fourth place finishes were achieved before he switched to a Reynard 91D-Cosworth for the season finale at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/nogaro\/\">Nogaro<\/a> which he finished in third position. That cemented seventh overall in Hill\u2019s third and final F3000 season.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Formula 1 with Brabham and Williams<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Hill continued as Williams test driver in 1992, racking up the miles as team leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/nigel-mansell\/\">Nigel Mansell<\/a> marched towards that year\u2019s world title. Alongside those duties, he joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.xn--com-vla\/database\/teams\/brabham\/\">Brabham<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1992-spanish-grand-prix\/\">Spanish GP<\/a> but the team was in terminal decline and its Judd-powered BT60B was not fit for purpose. Hill qualified for just two of his eight GPs in the car \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1992-british-grand-prix\/\">finishing 16th on debut at Silverstone<\/a> and 11th on the day that Nigel Mansell was crowned world champion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1992-hungarian-grand-prix\/\">Hungary<\/a>. The Hungarian GP proved to be Brabham\u2019s last appearance before the once great team folded.<\/p>\n<p>That sorry episode had not dented his reputation within Williams however. Despite having started just two GPs so far, Hill was promoted into the Williams-Renault race team as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/alain-prost\/\">Alain Prost<\/a>\u2019s team-mate for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1993-f1-world-championship\/\">1993 World Championship<\/a>. The Williams FW15C-Renault was the best car in the field and Hill recovered from a couple of errors during the opening race at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-south-african-grand-prix\/\">Kyalami<\/a> to push his illustrious colleague more and more as the season progressed. Certain victories at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-british-grand-prix\/\">Silverstone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-german-grand-prix\/\">Hockenheim<\/a> were lost to mechanical failure and a puncture before Hill scored successive wins in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-hungarian-grand-prix\/\">Hungary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgium<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1993-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italy<\/a>. It was almost enough to make the British public forget erstwhile hero Mansell. Hill was seen as the perfect complement to the mercurial Brazilian and it was left to the Englishman to lead the team following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1994-san-marino-grand-prix\/\">Senna\u2019s tragic death at Imola<\/a>. Victory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1994-spanish-grand-prix\/\">Spain<\/a> was followed by a popular home success at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1994-british-grand-prix\/\">Silverstone<\/a> (a race Graham never won) on the day that rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/michael-schumacher\/\">Michael Schumacher<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/benetton-formula\/\">Benetton<\/a> was disqualified.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"c-content-product content-product content-section\">\n    <div class=\"container\">\n        <div class=\"content-product__grid\">\n            <div class=\"content-product__product\">\n                                    <div\n                        data-behaviour=\"tag-automation\" data-automation-type=\"related-product\"\n                        data-tags=\"[&quot;damon hill&quot;]\" data-current-post=\"27462\">\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"content-product__content user-content\">\n                <p>Three wins in a row followed and Hill\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1994-japanese-grand-prix\/\">standout performance in the Japanese rain<\/a> ensured the title would be decided at the final race in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1994-australian-grand-prix\/\">Australia<\/a>. Hill was making his move for the lead in Adelaide, a pass that would have won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1994-f1-world-championship\/\">1994 World Championship<\/a> when Schumacher crashed into him to eliminate both and clinch the title by a single point. It was a bitter and controversial defeat that was accepted, in public at least, with admirable dignity.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1995-f1-world-championship\/\">1995 season<\/a> again saw Schumacher and Hill at the front of the field as their rivalry grew increasingly tense. That came to a head during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1995-british-grand-prix\/\">British GP<\/a> when they collided while disputing the lead and further contact followed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1995-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgium<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1995-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italy<\/a>. Hill was given a suspended ban for his part in the Monza incident as Bernie Ecclestone criticised their driving standards. Hill won four times during 1995 but eventually finished a distant runner-up behind the German.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>World Champion in his final year with Williams<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Schumacher accepted a lucrative contract to help rebuild <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a> so Hill faced a challenge from within Williams for the 1996 title. He was joined by reigning Champ Car champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jacques-villeneuve-2\/\">Jacques Villeneuve<\/a> and the precocious French-Canadian almost won his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1996-australian-grand-prix\/\">F1 debut in Australia<\/a>. Villeneuve\u2019s FW18 suffered an oil leak during the closing stages that allowed Hill through to score the first of eight wins that year.
