She remains the only woman to be classified in the world championship points after finishing sixth in the shortened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1975-spanish-grand-prix\/\">1975 Spanish Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Family background and early racing career<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The daughter of a butcher and a promising all-round sportswoman in her youth, Lombardi raced in Italy\u2019s junior formulae from 1965. Her final F3 season in 1973 was notable for a second place finish at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/casale\/\">Casale<\/a> and she also won that year\u2019s Italian Ford Mexico series.<\/p>\n<p>Lombardi graduated to the European Formula 5000 Championship for the following season with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/shellsport-south-africa\/\">Shellsport<\/a>\/Radio Luxembourg Lola T330-Chevrolet. Her second race was the tragic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1975-spanish-grand-prix\">Spanish GP<\/a> at Barcelona\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/montjuich-park\/\">Montjuich Park<\/a>. The shambles of an event was halted when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/rolf-stommelen\/\">Rolf Stommelen<\/a> crashed into the crowd with tragic consequences. Two laps down but running in sixth position at the time was Lella Lombardi. Only half points were awarded due to the shortened race but her place in F1 history was assured.<\/p>\n<p>She was seventh in that year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1975-german-grand-prix\/\">German GP<\/a> and 14th in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1976-brazilian-grand-prix\/\">1976 Brazilian GP<\/a> in her last race for March. Replaced by a suddenly available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/ronnie-peterson\/\">Ronnie Peterson<\/a>, Lombardi took her Lavazza coffee sponsorship to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ram-racing\/\">RAM Racing<\/a> for three races. She switched to sports cars and won world championship events at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/enna-pergusa\/\">Enna-Pergusa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/vallelunga\/\">Vallelunga<\/a> in 1979 with an Osella PA7-BMW. Her third such victory for the marque was the 1981 Mugello Six Hours as Lombardi and co-driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/giorgio-francia\/\">Giorgio Francia<\/a> finished fourth in the drivers\u2019 world championship.<\/p>\n<p>She also raced in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1985-european-touring-car-championship\/\">European Touring Car Championship<\/a> and had just enjoyed her best season in 1985 when she fell ill.
