Miles famously missed out on winning at Le Mans when he gave up a dominant lead in an effort to ensure a tied finish with the second-placed GT40 \u2014 to underline their defeat of the previous victorious Ferrari team.<\/p>\n<p>But the Bruce McLaren-driven car was deemed to have driven further and was awarded the victory. There would be no time to make amends: Miles was killed later that year while working on an evolution of the victorious Ford. His roll-call of achievements also included developing the Shelby Cobra and victory in the Daytona 24 Hours.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Early life<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Ken Miles was born Kenneth Henry J Miles on November 1, 1918 to Eric Miles and mother Clarice Jarvis in Sutton Coldfield, England.<\/p>\n<p>In 1929, Miles began riding a 350cc Trials Special Triumph bike, resulting in a crash that broke his nose and the loss of three teeth, but Miles persevered and fixed up an 1100-cc Salmson motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 15, in 1933, he met his future wife Mollie and purchased an Austin 7 Special that she painted in British Racing Green. It was this year when his engineering prowess was realised and he quit school to become an apprentice at Wolseley Motors.<\/p>\n<p>When World War II dawned, Miles was posted to an anti-aircraft unit in the British Territorial Army with just eight weeks of his apprenticeship remaining, becoming a driving instructor at Blackpool a year later. He was promoted to staff-sergeant in 1942, and was a part of the D-Day landings as part of a tank unit in 1944.<\/p>\n<p>While in the army, he wrote to\u00a0<em>Motor Sport<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0his letter was published in the August 1943 edition. He waxed lyrical about the \u201cgreat promise\u201d of American vehicles \u201cfrom a sporting point of view\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Miles was hired as an engineer at Morris Motors, and his son was born.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Racing career<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Miles\u2019s racing career began in earnest after WW2 \u2013 first racing at Silverstone on April 23, 1949, when\u00a0his name appeared in\u00a0Motor Sport\u00a0once more\u00a0as the driver of a\u00a0 Mercury V8-powered Frazer Nash that he took to various hillclimbs and club races.<\/p>\n<p>He found himself in the United States in 1951, working for Gough Industries, and entered races for the company in a stock MG-TD. In 1953, Miles won his first race in the United States, at Pebble Beach and won every race in the under-1500cc class that year.<\/p>\n<p>The MG was later modified to carry a 1500cc engine and dubbed the \u201cFlying Shingle\u201d, which brought him success in the SCCA Modified class against the likes of actor James Dean. He was swiftly picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/carroll-shelby\/\">Carroll Shelby<\/a> to test and race the Cobra \u2013 a partnership that was immortalised on screen in the 2019 movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ford\/\">Ford<\/a> vs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a>. He also had a hand in developing the Sunbeam Tiger for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/rootes-group\/\">Rootes Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While synonymous with Ford, Miles did race Ferraris from time to time including a 375 Plus Spider in 1955, which he took to third behind Ernie McAfee and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/phil-hill\/\">Phil Hill<\/a>. Hill would later join him at Shelby\u2019s squad alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/parnelli-jones\/\">Parnelli Jones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/dan-gurney\/\">Dan Gurney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/bob-bondurant\/\">Bob Bondurant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/chris-amon\/\">Chris Amon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/bruce-mclaren\/\">Bruce McLaren<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/roy-salvadori\/\">Roy Salvadori<\/a> among others. However, Miles was renowned not just for his driving, but engineering expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Miles\u2019s racing record continued to astonish, helping Shelby to the 1964 USRRC constructors\u2019 title, taking first with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/lloyd-ruby\/\">Lloyd Ruby<\/a> in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1965-daytona-continental\/\">1965 Daytona Continental<\/a> 2000km, second in the\u00a012 Hours of Sebring race\u00a0with Bruce McLaren in a GT40 and winning at Laguna Seca in a Cobra.<\/p>\n<p>He and Ruby won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1966-daytona-24-hours\/\">1966 Daytona 24 Hours<\/a>\u00a0for Ford and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/shelby-american\/\">Shelby American<\/a> in the MKIIB GT40, with GT40s sweeping all of the podium places. And the Ruby\/Miles pairing\u00a0won again at Sebring\u00a0in March that year in a Ford GT40 roadster \u2013 the X1.<\/p>\n<p>But his greatest triumph came at Le Mans. In 1966, MkII GT40s were dominating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1966-le-mans-24-hours\/\">Le Mans 24 Hours<\/a>, occupying the top four positions until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jerry-grant\/\">Jerry Grant<\/a>\/Gurney\u2019s car retired with a blown head gasket.<\/p>\n<p>Shelby was ordered to orchestrate a formation finish to trigger a dead heat, with Denny Hulme\/Miles in the lead ahead of McLaren\/Amon in third. It was to be an evolution of its winning sports car to take on Ferrari&#8217;s growing might.<\/p>\n<p>On August 18, 1966, Miles died testing a J-Car at Californian circuit Riverside. His Ford flew off a high bank at 200mph and rolled over multiple times, throwing the driver out of the car on its third revolution and bursting into flames.<\/p>\n<p>Ford later investigated the crash and blamed it on mechanical failure. Shelby was shaken, and more than 400 people attended his funeral on the Sunday after his death including Shelby, Otto Zipper and a number of former team-mates.<\/p>\n<p>Miles died having given Ford
