With four titles and 51 Grand Prix victories to his name, \u201cThe Professor\u201d was the most successful driver during an era that included the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/nelson-piquet\/\">Nelson Piquet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/nigel-mansell\/\">Nigel Mansell<\/a> and his greatest rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/ayrton-senna\/\">Ayrton Senna<\/a>. The intense and often controversial competition between Prost and Senna was immortalised in the documentary \u201cSenna\u201d and remains one of motor racing\u2019s fiercest rivalries.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fast track through the junior categories<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Frenchman\u2019s speed, racing brain and championship winning potential was evident from childhood. Victory in karting\u2019s Junior World Cup in 1973 was followed by graduation to cars two years later as winner of the Pilot Elf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/paul-ricard\/\">Paul Ricard<\/a>. That success continued in Formula Renault 2.0 with Prost winning both the 1976 French and 1977 European titles with a works Martini.<\/p>\n<p>He was part of the Hugues de Chaunac-run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/martini\/\">Martini-Renault<\/a> squad for the 1978 Formula 3 season although that year\u2019s MK21B was somewhat disappointing. That said, Prost beat the European regulars at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/jarama\/\">J\u00e1rama<\/a> in September and he shared that year\u2019s national title with Chevron\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jean-louis-schlesser\/\">Jean-Louis Schlesser<\/a>. He remained in the category in 1979 and his Elf-sponsored Martini MK27-Renault dominated both the French and European Championships. Despite that, the young rookie outperformed established team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/john-watson\/\">John Watson<\/a> at the start of the season \u2013 finishing his first two races in the points (including fifth in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-brazilian-grand-prix\/\">Brazil<\/a>) before breaking his arm in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-south-african-grand-prix\/\">South Africa<\/a>. He missed that and the subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-long-beach-grand-prix\/\">Long Beach Grand Prix<\/a> as a consequence before returning to score further sixth place finishes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-british-grand-prix\/\">Brands Hatch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1980-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Zandvoort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That year\u2019s most impressive newcomer, Prost switched to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/renault-f1\/\">Renault<\/a> for his sophomore F1 campaign in 1981 and confirmed that talent. The 1500cc turbocharged Renault engine may have been temperamental but he delivered when the car held together. When he finished it was in a podium position and Prost followed a maiden victory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1981-french-grand-prix\/\">France<\/a> (on just his 19th F1 start) with back-to-back wins at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1981-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Zandvoort<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1981-italian-grand-prix\/\">Monza<\/a>. However, it was mid-season before he scored another point as technical gremlins and a couple of incidents thwarted his challenge. He finished second at Paul Ricard (after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/rene-arnoux\/\">Ren\u00e9 Arnoux<\/a> disobeyed team orders) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/dijon-prenois\/\">Dijon-Prenois<\/a> but fourth overall was a disappointing return from a season that had begun with such promise.<\/p>\n<p>Renault finally added reliability to their engine\u2019s undoubted power in 1983 and Prost seemed on course for a maiden championship success. He won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-french-grand-prix\/\">French<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-belgian-grand-prix\/\">Belgian<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-british-grand-prix\/\">British<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-austrian-grand-prix\/\">Austrian GPs<\/a> to establish a 14 point lead in the standings. With the title seemingly his, Prost made an uncharacteristic error while disputing the lead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-dutch-grand-prix\/\">Dutch GP<\/a> \u2013 crashing into Piquet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/brabham\/\">Brabham<\/a>-BMW with both rivals eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>A first mechanical failure of the season at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-italian-grand-prix\/\">Monza<\/a> further blunted his challenge as Piquet won that race and the next to close to within two points of Prost before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1983-south-african-grand-prix\/\">South African<\/a> finale. When Prost\u2019s turbo expired after 35 laps of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/kyalami\/\">Kyalami<\/a>, Piquet was able to complete a conservative race to snatch a narrow World Championship victory with Prost a deflated runner-up. It proved a wise decision for the MP4\/2 was the class of the field in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1984-f1-world-championship\/\">1984<\/a> and he fought out a season-long battle for the title with team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/niki-lauda\/\">Niki Lauda<\/a>. Prost scored more wins (seven) than the Austrian veteran but was Lauda\u2019s experience that eventually prevailed. Just half a point separated the McLaren drivers (half points had been awarded for the curtailed wet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1984-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monaco GP<\/a>) at the end of the season with Prost finishing as runner-up for a second successive season.<\/p>\n<p>Having come so close in recent seasons, Prost finally became the France\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1985-f1-world-championship\/\">World Champion in 1985<\/a>. He won the opening race in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-brazilian-grand-prix\/\">Brazil<\/a> but lost the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-san-marino-grand-prix\/\">San Marino GP<\/a> when his car was found to be underweight after the race. Podium finishes at nine of the next 10 races included further victories in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monaco<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-british-grand-prix\/\">Britain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-austrian-grand-prix\/\">Austria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1985-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italy<\/a> and Prost clinched the title at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/brands-hatch\/\">Brands Hatch<\/a> with two races to spare.<\/p>\n<p>The Williams-Honda team was increasingly competitive during 1985 and they began the following season as championship favourites. However, Mansell and new team-mate Piquet traded wins while Prost remained in the championship fight throughout the season thanks to three victories and consistent podium finishes. The three rivals all maintained a mathematical chance of the title when the circus assembled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1986-australian-grand-prix\/\">Adelaide<\/a> for the final round. When Mansell suffered a spectacular tyre failure on the Dequetteville Straight and Piquet pitted as a precaution, Prost swept through to victory and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1986-f1-world-championship\/\">World Championship<\/a> once more. In doing so, the Frenchman became the first driver to retain the title since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jack-brabham\/\">Jack Brabham<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1960-f1-world-championship\/\">1960<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1987 was the final year of TAG Porsche\u2019s partnership with McLaren but Prost\u2019s challenge for a third title in a row suffered through a lack of engine development. It was evident from the first practice session that the McLaren MP4\/4-Honda was the class of the field and the team won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1988-f1-world-championship\/\">15 of the 16 World Championship GPs that year<\/a>. They went head-to-head for the world title and Prost outscored his team-mate over the season. However, with each driver counting his best 11 results, it was Senna\u2019s better win rate (eight to seven) that delivered the title with a round to spare.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, having two of the best F1 drivers of all time in a dominant car led to a fierce rivalry and that boiled over in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1989-f1-world-championship\/\">1989<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With McLaren-Honda once more the team to beat in this first season of 3500cc normally aspirated engines, the frosty relationship between Prost and Senna escalated to outright hostility at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1989-san-marino-grand-prix\/\">Imola<\/a>. They lapped the field with Senna leading all the way but Prost was seething after the race \u2013 the Brazilian seemingly having disobeyed a pre-race team agreement. It was a successful if toxic final season for Prost at McLaren although his third World Championship was only sealed in the most controversial of circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Senna entered the penultimate race of the year needing to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1989-japanese-grand-prix\/\">Japanese GP<\/a> to maintain any chance of retaining the title. With five laps to go, Senna attempted to pass his team-mate entering the chicane only for Prost to turn into his car. Prost was out but Senna re-joined and won the race, only to be disqualified after the event. Remember with Nelson [Piquet], we were going on holidays together the same year we were fighting for the championship in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeke was unbelievable, one of my best team-mates. Everybody said at the beginning of the year it would be a disaster. Then when Ayrton came we reached a level of performance and obviously you enjoy it a little bit less. I really suffered a lot, so you cannot enjoy it the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAyrton represented more panache. I was the \u2018Professor\u2019, clinical. He was \u2018mystic\u2019 and people liked that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he impressed me I must say it was in qualifying sometimes, I don\u2019t remember when exactly. Never in race conditions. Never. In race conditions, in the warm-up, most of the time I was quicker.<\/p>\n<p>Despite strongly disagreeing with the perception of himself being an inferior racer to Senna, Prost accepts it may well be set in stone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like it stays that way for ever, it is part of the history,\u201d he says. \u201cLook at my other team-mates: Watson, Arnoux, [Eddie] Cheever, Niki, Keke, Stefan [Johansson], Nigel, Jean [Alesi] and Damon [Hill]. Nobody talks about them. I had five world champions as team-mates, so it is a bit of a shame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it is the way it is. Today you have social media and everybody is coming back to videos of our fights. Sometimes I don\u2019t understand. Spurred on by his desire to beat Senna and McLaren-Honda, Prost compensated for Ferrari\u2019s power deficit to win five times, including three mid-season races in a row. In contrast to the previous Japanese GP, it was Prost who needed victory to keep hopes of the title alive. Furious that the FIA decided that his pole position should be on the \u201cdirty\u201d side of the track and harbouring a clear sense of injustice from the previous year\u2019s race, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1990-japanese-grand-prix\/\">Senna drove his rival off the road at the start in a high speed and dangerous manoeuvre that clinched the title<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prost\u2019s second season with Ferrari was a disaster and the Frenchman failed to win a race for the first time since his debut season in 1980. The team began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1991-f1-world-championship\/\">1991<\/a> with an upgraded car which proved no match for the latest McLaren-Honda. Prost made an embarrassing exit at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1991-san-marino-grand-prix\/\">Imola<\/a> \u2013 pilloried in the Italian press after spinning into the barriers on the way to the grid \u2013 and finished no higher than second in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1991-united-states-grand-prix\/\">United States<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1991-french-grand-prix\/\">French<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1991-spanish-grand-prix\/\">Spanish GP<\/a>s. The FW15C was the most technologically advanced car of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1993-f1-world-championship\/\">1993<\/a> but Prost faced competition from a familiar foe again that year. Senna\u2019s Ford-powered McLaren lacked Renault\u2019s horsepower but the Brazilian won three early races to lead the championship. However, Prost eventually won seven times to ease to the World Championship for a fourth time. That proved to be Prost\u2019s final season as a Grand Prix driver for he retired at the end of the year rather than accept Senna as his team-mate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1994-f1-world-championship\/\">1994<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were tests for McLaren in 1994 and 1995 but it was as a team owner that Prost returned to the sport. He acquired the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ligier\/\">Ligier<\/a> team in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/1997-f1-world-championship\/\">1997<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/olivier-panis\/\">Olivier Panis<\/a> finished that year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1997-spanish-grand-prix\/\">Spanish GP<\/a> for the renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/prost-grand-prix\/\">Prost Grand Prix<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/jarno-trulli\/\">Jarno Trulli<\/a> repeated that result in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/1999-european-grand-prix\/\">1999 European GP<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/nurburgring\/\">N\u00fcrburgring<\/a> but the debt-ridden team eventually closed its doors at the end of 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Prost, who has been awarded the L\u00e9gion d\u2019honneur and OBE, remains a legend of French motor racing and most recently has been a partner in the Renault e.DAMS Formula E team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do ask myself sometimes how I am going to be remembered,&#8221; the Frenchman told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/archive\/article\/march-2024\/50\/alain-prost-interview-it-sounds-like-a-joke-but-im-completely-underrated\/\"><em>Motor Sport<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;It sounds like a joke but I\u2019m completely underrated!
