moment he arrived thanks to his permanent smile and increasingly impressive performances. He graduated to Formula BMW Asia a year later thanks to a scholarship and won twice at Pattaya\u2019s Bira Circuit as he finished third overall for Eurasia Motorsport. A double victory during the opening weekend at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/circuits\/oulton-park\/\">Oulton Park<\/a> set the tone and another four wins delivered title success once more. He drove for ISR Racing\u2019s\u00a0F.Renault\u00a03.5 team \u2013 when his Friday F1 testing duties allowed \u2013 with another win on the streets of Monte Carlo the highlight. However, Red Bull wanted to evaluate Ricciardo\u2019s F1 race potential so he was eased into the back-of-the-grid HRT team from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2011-british-grand-prix\/\">British GP<\/a>. However, a botched start lost the benefits of his impressive sixth on the grid in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2012-bahrain-grand-prix\/\">Bahrain<\/a>. These former British F3 champions had initially been evenly matched but Ricciardo\u2019s qualifying pace now gave him the edge. Seventh in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2013-chinese-grand-prix\/\">China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2013-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italy<\/a> were his best results to date as he beat Vergne into 14th in the championship. However, he shone nonetheless as team-mate and reigning champion Sebastian Vettel struggled to adapt to the new turbocharged formula. And on the days when the fates conspired, it was Ricciardo who benefited thanks to his exemplary tyre management. He passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/nico-rosberg\/\">Nico Rosberg<\/a>\u2019s brakeless Merc with two laps to go in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2014-canadian-grand-prix-2\/\">Montr\u00e9al<\/a> to score a popular breakthrough victory. It was only on F1&#8217;s tighte<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r circuits, where engine power wa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s less of a premium,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the team fought for podium finishes. Ricciardo was third in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2015-hungarian-grand-prix\/\">Hungary<\/a> and second in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2015-singapore-grand-prix\/\">Singapore<\/a>, having qualified on the front row for the latter. Eighth in the championship represented a backwards step, especially as team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/daniil-kvyat\/\">Daniil Kvyat<\/a> narrowly beat him in the points.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2016-f1-world-championship\/\">2016<\/a>, Kvyat was replaced part-way through the season by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/max-verstappen\/\">Max Verstappen<\/a>, who began to pressure Ricciardo&#8217;s position as team leader. The Australian finished that season third in the championship behind the Mercedes team-mates. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2017-f1-world-championship\/\">2017<\/a> Red Bull slipped behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/ferrari\/\">Ferrari<\/a> in the pecking order with Ricciardo and Verstappen finishing fifth and sixth in the drivers&#8217; championship and not featuring in the title fight despite the revamped regulations. The Australian took just one win all season in a chaotic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2017-azerbaijan-grand-prix\/\">Azerbaijan Grand Prix<\/a> though was unfortunate not to win in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2017-monaco-grand-prix-2\/\">Monaco<\/a> following a botched Red Bull pit stop handing victory to Lewis Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2018-f1-world-championship\/\">following season<\/a> turned out to be Ricciardo&#8217;s final with Red Bull as the team put its focus onto Verstappen for the future. Both drivers won two races apiece all season but a series of unreliability crippled Ricciardo&#8217;s season and he slumped to sixth in the championship. He departed for Renault the following year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dead end at Renault<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A move to Renault followed with one eye firmly on the future. The French team was slowly clawing its way from the back of the pack to a more competitive position and had finished the previous year a distant fourth in the team&#8217;s standings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2019-f1-world-championship\/\">2019<\/a> was not what he had hoped for though as a lack of pace brought his first winless season since 2015. A season best finish of fourth came at the Italian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2020-f1-world-championship\/\">2020<\/a> was only slightly better as the global pandemic brought a truncated season. Ricciardo returned to the podium twice, scoring a third-place finish in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2020-eifel-grand-prix\/\">Eifel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2020-emilia-romagna-grand-prix\/\">Emilia Romagna Grands Prix<\/a>. He finished the season fifth in the championship but was on the move once again for 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Switch to McLaren ends in disappointment\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After two fruitless years and without a clear path back to the front of the grid emerging at Renault, Ricciardo swapped allegiances to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/teams\/mclaren\/\">McLaren<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2021-f1-world-championship\/\">2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joining as an experienced race winner, there was a lot of expectation from both sides that the marriage would help take McLaren to the front of the grid, yet that soon became a distant dream.<\/p>\n<p>Partnering young charger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/lando-norris\/\">Lando Norris<\/a>, the Briton had the measure of his vastly more experienced team-mate during their first season together where he finished 45 points above in the standings and out-qualified the Australian 15 times to seven.<\/p>\n<p>Although for the large part of the season Ricciardo struggled for competitiveness, it was him, not Norris, who capitalised best at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2021-italian-grand-prix\/\">Italian Grand Prix<\/a> to give McLaren its first win since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Lining up on the front-row behind ex-team-mate Verstappen, Ricciardo took the lead off the line before the Dutchman retired on lap 25 after a collision with Lewis Hamilton at the opening chicane.<\/p>\n<p>This gave opportunity to Norris to eventually take second en route to McLaren claiming the first, and only, one-two of the 2021 season.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ricciardo&#8217;s win at Monza was just one good thing in a season full of disappointment and so the new regulations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/championships\/2022-f1-world-championship\/\">2022<\/a> brought optimism that things could change.<\/p>\n<p>But things did not really change and Ricciardo entered the summer break 57 points behind Norris after scoring points in only four races from a possible 13.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to that, during the first half of the season Ricciardo had only managed to out-qualify his team-mate twice, while even being comfortably beat on both occasions \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2022-spanish-grand-prix\/\">Spain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/races\/2022-monaco-grand-prix\/\">Monaco<\/a> \u2014 when Norris was suffering badly with tonsillitis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, after a disappointing season and a half, the decision was made to terminate Ricciardo\u2019s deal early, replacing him with fellow Aussie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportmagazine.com\/database\/drivers\/oscar-piastri\/\">Oscar Piastri<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to limited options, Ricciardo was unable to secure a full-time seat in F1 for 2023, choosing instead to join Red Bull as a third driver.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ricciardo returns (twice) then leaves\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After spending months on the sidelines in 2023, Ricciardo opened the door to an F1 return in a Pirelli tyre test with Red Bull around Silverstone \u2014 days after the British Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the wheel of the RB19, the Aussie&#8217;s best lap in the test would have been good enough for the front row of the grid \u2014 alongside former Milton Keynes team-mate Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>The performance was enough to convince Red Bull bosses that the Ricciardo was still capable of fighting it out on a competitive grid, so chose to replace RB&#8217;s Nyck de Vries with the Aussie from the Hungarian GP onward.<\/p>\n<p>Ricciardo qualified 13th and finished 13th on his F1 return, but just two races later in Zandvoort, he was back on the sidelines again after breaking his hand during a crash in free practice.<\/p>\n<p>He returned again at COTA, but his performances continued to be adequate at best. A seventh-place finish in Mexico City hinted at a dramatic return to form, but throughout the rest of 2023 and into 2024, Ricciardo continued to be outperformed by his younger team-mate Yuki Tsunoda.<\/p>\n<p>Then, shortly after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Ricciardo announced that he would be parting ways with RB immediatley \u2014 with Liam Lawson coming in to replacing him for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n<p>It was a disappointing and premature ending to arguably one of the biggest &#8216;What If?&#8217; F1 careers ever.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n
