toggle\">\n            <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">George Russell\u2019s debut season in a Silver Arrow was an overwhelming success, becoming a pole sitter and race winner, all whilst racing in an underperforming car alongside a 7-time world champion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Norfolk-born racer\u00a0was a serial championship winner on his march through the junior single-seater categories. He graduated to Formula 1 with Williams in 2019, and while that year was spent at the wrong end of the grid, Russell emerged with his reputation enhanced, something he&#8217;d continue to do throughout 2020 and 2021, where his qualifying performances outshone his team-mate and car, culminating in second place on the grid at Spa in 2021 \u2014 which earned him second place on the podium after the short race was run entirely behind the safety car.<\/p>\n<p>Russell&#8217;s position as a Mercedes junior driver saw him stand in for Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix when the world champion was struck by Covid. He qualified second behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas and took the lead, looking set for the win before a farcical pitstop error.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, he was announced as Bottas&#8217;s replacement at the team for 2022.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Early racing career <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A British and European champion in karts, Russell switched to cars in 2014 when racing in Formula Renault 2.0 and BRDC Formula 4. Fourth in F.Renault ALPS with Koiranen GP, the 16-year-old won the latter title thanks to five victories for reigning champions Lanan Racing, clinching the championship after a four-way decider at Snetterton. Armed with a Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen, Russell won the second race of the opening weekend at Silverstone but only finished on the podium twice more all year. Sixth in the final standings, Russell finished second in the F3 Masters at Zandvoort when beaten by team-mate Giovinazzi. He switched to Hitech GP for 2016 and counted victories at Pau and Spa-Francorchamps among his ten podium finishes as he claimed third overall.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Championship success in GP3 and Formula 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now part of Mercedes-Benz\u2019s junior driver roster, Russell joined ART Grand Prix for the 2017 GP3 Series. He converted race one pole position into victory at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone as he established himself at the top of the championship standings. Further victories in Belgium and Italy saw Russell ease to the title ahead of Albon. Mercedes also placed Russell with Force India as Friday test driver at the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi GPs as they evaluated him for the future.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"c-content-product content-product content-section\">\n    <div class=\"container\">\n        <div class=\"content-product__grid\">\n            <div class=\"content-product__product\">\n                                    <div\n                        data-behaviour=\"tag-automation\" data-automation-type=\"related-product\"\n                        data-tags=\"[&quot;George Russell&quot;]\" data-current-post=\"35196\">\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"content-product__content user-content\">\n                <p>Named Mercedes Formula 1 reserve driver for 2018, Russell remained with ART for that year\u2019s graduation to F2. A late safety car denied victory in Baku\u2019s Feature race but he charged through the field to win the following day\u2019s Sprint. That was the first of seven victories as he beat Albon to another championship title.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Formula 1 with Williams<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Russell used a PowerPoint presentation to help convince Williams of his credentials and he signed a two-year contract for the 2019 and 2020 F1 seasons. Unfortunately, the Williams FW42-Mercedes was late and proved to be the slowest car in the field when it was ready. That said, Russell out-qualified and normally out-raced team-mate Robert Kubica although 11th in Germany was as close as he came to scoring a championship point during his rookie season.<\/p>\n<p>2020 continued in a similar vein for Russell, but his highlight came at the penultimate race of the season after Lewis Hamilton tested positive for Covid-19 in the build-up. Russell chosen by Mercedes for one race and he gave a brilliant account of himself throughout the weekend. Despite sitting in the car for the first time on Friday, Russell finished just 0.062sec off of Valtteri Bottas&#8217; pole position time, but race day cemented his case for a call-up in the future. The Briton seized the lead of the race at the first corner and controlled proceedings from there until a mistake by Mercedes took him out of the lead. A tyre mix-up in a double-stack pit stop required a further stop to rectify the mistake and dropped Russell to fifth, behind Bottas. A spectacular move on the Finn and passes on Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon had him bearing down on leader Sergio Perez until a puncture with nine laps to go ended his victory hopes. He bounced back to finish ninth and earn his first F1 points, but his reputation had soared.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stayed at Williams for the 2021 season but made it clear during the early phase of the season he intended to settle his future before the summer break. A crash with Valtteri Bottas at Imola fighting for position heightened tensions and speculation over the second Mercedes seat. Russell eventually admitted fault and apologised for his reaction to the incident having initially suggested Bottas had raced him differently due to the duo&#8217;s battle over the race seat for &#8217;22.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The move to Mercedes\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an accomplished Mercedes junior driver, Russell\u2019s move into a Silver Arrow was inevitable and was announced during the summer break of the 2021 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His \u2018Mr Saturday\u2019 reputation transitioned into competent performances on Sunday\u2019s too, securing top five finishes in his first nine grand prix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His patience with the unruly W13 shone through, remaining positive about the team&#8217;s performance despite its inability to regularly compete for race wins. But his resilience finally paid off in Sao Paulo, where in a race weekend to remember, he reached the top step of the podium in both the sprint race and the grand prix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russell\u2019s consistent high level of performances eventually earned him fourth place in the drivers\u2019 standings, becoming only the fourth driver to beat Lewis Hamilton as a team-mate. <\/span>But 2023 told a vastly different story.<\/p>\n<p>Russell struggled to find a consistent level of performance throughout the season: contending for podium places in one race before crashing out or finishing way down the running order in the next. There were occasional highlights, including third-place finishes in Spain and Abu Dhabi, but Russell named the 2024 campaign as his &#8220;worst ever&#8221; after he finished a distant eighth in the drivers&#8217; standings \u2014 59 points behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully for Mercedes, Russell bounced back to competitive form in 2024 and cemented himself as the teams leader. With Hamilton announcing his departure to Ferrari for 2025, the Brackley outfit looked to test Russell&#8217;s leadership skills in a year filled with more car and set-up struggles. The Briton responded with two podiums and impressive victories in Austria and Las Vegas &#8211; evidence that with the right machinery, Russell could contend against the very best.<\/p>\n<p>In his first year as Mercedes&#8217; clear #1 ibn 2025, Russell led the team alongside rookie Kimi Antonelli, battling an inconsistent W16.
