<p>The son of 1990 and 1992 World Rally Champion of the same name, Carlos Sainz chose circuit racing as his preferred his career path. His first five seasons racing cars included Formula Renault titles at both 2000cc and 3500cc capacities and warranted his inclusion in one of the least experienced line-ups in modern history when he made Formula 1 debut in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Early success in karts and cars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The younger Sainz was 10 years old when he started karting on an indoor track owned by his father. The highlight of that early career was victory in the 2009 KF3 Monaco Kart Cup \u2013 an event that had previously been won by both Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull saw the potential and backed his move into the European Formula BMW Championship in 2010. He qualified on pole position for both Silverstone rounds and defeated eventual champion Robin Frijns in Race Two. Fourth in the final European standings, he scored another three victories (including at Macau) while a guest driver in the Pacific series.<\/p>\n<p>He graduated to F.Renault 2.0 in 2011 as Daniil Kvyat\u2019s Koiranen Brothers team-mate. Sainz won races during the opening two Eurocup weekends at Motorland Arag\u00f3n and Spa-Francorchamps to lead the standings. However, a mid-season dip in form (including being penalised at Silverstone) meant he was overtaken by Frijns by the end of the season. It was an inconsistent campaign although he impressed on occasion \u2013 especially in the wet. Four victories included a double success at Monza as Sainz finished fifth in the European standings and sixth in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Sainz joined MW Arden for the 2013 GP3 series but was overshadowed by team-mate Kvyat. While the Russian eventually eased to the title to earn an F1 seat for the following season, Sainz could only finish 10th overall after scoring just two podiums all season. He also made his F.Renault 3.5 debut during 2013 and looked to that series for progress at what was already a crucial stage of his career.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Formula Renault 3.5 \u2013 no margin for error<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>His first full F.Renault 3.5 season was with reigning champions DAMS and he responded with a record breaking campaign. The rookie won seven times during 2014 as he clinched the title exactly 24 years after his father had won the World Rally Championship for the first time. With future plans still unclear (seemingly having been usurped by Max Verstappen in Red Bull\u2019s junior ranks), Sainz tested a Red Bull RB10-Renault at Abu Dhabi after the final Grand Prix. He impressed sufficiently to be promoted to the sister Toro Rosso team for the 2015 Formula 1 season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Formula 1 \u2013 impressing with Toro Rosso and Renault<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Team-mate Max Verstappen stole the headlines during the 2015 F1 World Championship due to his age and raceday heroics but Sainz also enjoyed a noteworthy campaign. Seventh on the grid for his debut in Australia and in the points that race and the next, Sainz then qualified fifth for his home race. Indeed, it was his single lap pace which proved most impressive \u2013 the Spaniard out-qualifying his highly rated team-mate over the season. However, reliability issues plus accidents in Russia and the United States too often thwarted the chance of further points finishes.<\/p>\n<p>He flourished during a consistent 2016 campaign despite his Toro Rosso STR11 now being powered by a year-old Ferrari power unit. Having compared favourably with Verstappen before the Dutchman\u2019s promotion to Red Bull Racing, Sainz then overshadowed the demoted Daniil Kvyat for the remainder of the season. He was seventh in Spain before holding off Lewis Hamilton\u2019s Mercedes to finish sixth on the streets of Monte Carlo. A career-best fourth in Singapore and having already signed a 2018 Renault contract, Sainz switched to the Enstone-based team for the last four races of the season. He immediately finished seventh in the United States and ended the year ninth in the 2017 World Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Sainz struggled to get to grips with the Renault RS18, especially in qualifying, and was unable to impose himself over experienced team-mate Nico H\u00fclkenberg. He finished fifth in Azerbaijan but was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>McLaren team leader<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Instead, Sainz replaced compatriot Fernando Alonso at McLaren and enjoyed a healthy partnership with rookie team-mate Lando Norris as team and driver re-established themselves in 2019. Outqualified 10-9 by the Englishman, Sainz excelled on raceday and snatched sixth in the final standings on the last lap of the final race of the year. He took an excellent eighth in Austria after several late overtaking manoeuvres and came from the back of the grid again in Brazil to claim McLaren\u2019s first podium finish since the 2014 Australian GP.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An upturn in fortunes could not have come at a better time for Sainz, who replaced Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Moving to the front\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Spaniard&#8217;s debut season for Ferrari started with speculation, with many questioning his ability in comparison to new teammate Charles Leclerc. But any doubts were put to rest over the course of the season, with Sainz four podium finishes and eventually finishing above his teammate in the drivers\u2019 standings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2022, back-to-back podium finishes to begin the season earned Sainz a contract extension with Ferrari, which would see him race in red until 2024. This was immediately followed by DNF\u2019s in Australia and at Imola, leaving Tifosi speculative of Sainz\u2019 true potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But once again, Sainz proved his worth, taking a debut pole position and his first grand prix win at a drama-filled British Grand Prix. After a late safety car restart, caused by Valtteri Bottas\u2019 Alfa Romeo, Sainz took full advantage of his fresh tyres, jumping his teammate and disappearing into the distance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the end of the season, Sainz ultimately fell to fifth in the drivers\u2019 standings, bested by the talents of George Russell and Sergio Perez in his pursuit for third.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Sainz bounced back to form and earned a place amongst the very finest grand prix drivers the F1 grid had to offer. In the midst of overwhelming Red Bull dominance and the heightened form of McLaren, the Spaniard was still able to finish regularly inside the top five and captured an impressive victory in Singapore \u2014 the only non-Red Bull victory of the 2023 season.<\/p>\n<p>Sainz&#8217;s form carried over into 2024 as first finished third in Bahrain, but was then forced to sit on the sidelines in Saudi Arabia having suffered from appendicitis. Nevertheless, he bounced back to take a brilliant victory in Australia and continued his run of red hot form, finishing third in Japan, fifth in China, Miami and Imola and third in Monaco.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of the season saw Sainz begin to fall ever so slightly backwards, as the form of McLaren and his own team-mate, Charles Leclerc, began to eat into his points totals. Unfortunate crashes in Azerbaijan and Brazil soon meant that the Spaniard was out of the running for a top three finish in the drivers&#8217; standings, but another brilliant victory in Mexico City soon swung the constructors&#8217; title in Ferrari&#8217;s favour.<\/p>\n<p>Ever a team player, Sainz continued to rack up good performances as the season drew to a close. Another podium finish in Las Vegas and a sixth-place finish in Qatar put Ferrari just 21 points shy of McLaren heading into the season finale, and Sainz remained vigilant in his pursuit of Lando Norris throughout the Abu Dhabi GP. The Spaniard was ultimately unable to do better than second, forfeiting the constructors&#8217; title to McLaren, but reaching the podium one final time was the perfect way to sign off his time at Ferrari in style.<\/p>\n<p>For 2025, Sainz embarked on a new chapter with Williams, joining the Grove-based team on a long-term deal alongside Alex Albon. In his first season, he helped drive clear progress, scoring 64 points, finishing ninth in the drivers\u2019 standings and playing a key role in securing fifth for Williams in the constructors\u2019 championship.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights included two grand prix podiums &#8211; in Azerbaijan and Qatar &#8211; plus a sprint podium in Austin, underlining both his pace and his value as Williams worked to
