Sports cars followed in the mid-1970s and Herbert M\u00fcller won the 1976 Interserie with a Sauber C5-BMW.<\/p>\n<p>It was an engine deal with Mercedes-Benz that transformed Sauber\u2019s fortunes from 1985. Mike Thackwell and Henri Pescarolo won the following year\u2019s N\u00fcrburgring 1000Kms and the team challenged Jaguar for the world title two years later. Winners of the 1989 Le Mans 24 Hours and World Champions that year and the next, Formula 1 was next on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Sauber made its F1 debut at the 1993 South African GP \u2013 JJ Lehto finishing fifth that day. With Mercedes-Benz forging a long-term partnership with McLaren, Sauber switched to works Ford units in 1995 and Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished third in Italy. The team were powered by Ferrari engines from 1997 and Jean Alesi qualified for the 1998 Austrian GP on the front row only to crash out of the race.<\/p>\n<p>BMW bought Sauber in 2006 and officially renamed it BMW Sauber F1 Team. Robert Kubica \u2013 a star in the making \u2013 won the 2008 Canadian GP but BMW decided to withdraw from the sport at the end of the following season when victim to the worsening world economy.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the helm once more, Sauber spent the next years struggling to finance a midfield F1 team. There have been occasions when they appeared on the verge of repeating Kubica\u2019s success \u2013 most notably when Sergio P\u00e9rez finished second in the 2012 Malaysian GP. Only a half spin while closing on Fernando Alonso\u2019s Ferrari denied victory.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Sauber semi-retired in October 2012, handing Team Principal duties to CEO Monisha Kaltenborn. It was sold to Longbow Finance, a Swiss investment company, in 2016 and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Vasser replaced Kaltenborn during the following year. Sauber had used Ferrari engines since BMW\u2019s withdrawal and the ever closer technical partnership with the Fiat-owned marque led to sponsorship from Alfa Romeo in 2018, with the cars officially rebranded for the 2019 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The longstanding technical partnership with Ferrari saw increasing involvement from Alfa Romeo as a title sponsor, with the team rebranded as Alfa Romeo Racing from 2019 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Kimi R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen and Antonio Giovinazzi led the squad for several seasons, followed by Valtteri Bottas and Formula 1&#8217;s first Chinese driver, Zhou Guanyu.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight came in 2022 when the team achieved sixth place in the constructors&#8217; standings, its best result in a decade. However, by 2023, performance declined, with Alfa Romeo finishing ninth in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>With Alfa Romeo ending its title sponsorship after 2023, Sauber entered a new era in 2024 as Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber and focused on positioning itself for Audi&#8217;s arrival. Bottas and Zhou completed their final season together, while 2024 results placed the team near the back of the midfield.<\/p>\n<p>For 2025, the driver line-up was refreshed with veteran Nico H\u00fclkenberg and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto joining, marking the final chapter of Sauber&#8217;s independent identity as it transitions to full Audi works status for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley took key leadership roles, driving a major modernisation push, opening new technology centres, and laying the foundation for Audi&#8217;s ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>The Sauber name is set
