Description
In 1971 Roman Polanski turned his lens on the glamorous and dangerous world of Formula One and on Jackie Stewart in particular. Weekend of a Champion follows Stewart as he tries to win the most glamorous and dangerous Grand Prix of them all: Monaco. Superbly filmed (as you would expect) and with access that film crews today would die for, this is the ultimate record of the DFV era of British dominance.
Amongst the highlights for F1 fans is the onboard camera work from Stewart’s Tyrell around a very wet Monaco circuit.
Also present are other stars of the scene including Francois Cevert, who we see receiving the Stewart knowledge, Graham Hill, Jean-Pierre Beltoise and some “veterans” including Stirling Moss.
Polanski’s film shows a vanished world where everything was at once more relaxed and far more highly charged than today’s F1. There’s a remarkable post-script to the original film where Jackie Stewart and Roman Polanski meet again to discuss the film and the sport.
