Ex-F1 world champions Alan Jones and Nigel Mansell are just two of the drivers talking to the organisers of a proposed single-seater series designed to replicate the success of the Seniors tours of golf and tennis.

The championship, to be known as Grand Prix Masters, could be as little as a month away from a public unveiling, but details of a one-make series for high-tech 600bhp cars are emerging now. The plan appears to be to put together a grid of highprofile former grand prix drivers to race the identical machines.

Jones, world champion in 1980, has made no secret of his desire to take part in the series, which would kick off with a short run of races at the end of 2005. Mansell is known to have been approached, as have Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Keke Rosberg and Stefan Johansson.

“This looks like being a really great championship and I hope it goes ahead,” said 57-year-old Jones. “I’m going to be throwing myself into the gym and altering the lifestyle a little bit.”

Both the chassis and engines are being built by Zytek Engineering in Britain and the first car should be up and running by May 2005.

[34236,167,192,34623,34532,34317,34321
121591
121637
