Carl Gray started the new VSCC hillclimb season just as he finished the 2005 edition, by taking another overall FTD in his 1.1-litre Hardy Special. Just as he had at Loton Park the previous autumn, Gray outshone more powerful cars with brave handling of the supercharged single-seater.

Unfortunately, a major oil spillage meant that some classes only had one timed run, but that was enough for Gray to set a 48.15sec best.

Stewart Becker (Morgan-GN ‘Salome’) was six-tenths of a second away, while 2005 FTD-setter Trevor John was best of the pre-war cars in his AC/GN ‘Cognac’ on 49.25sec.

Becker took the prize for the fastest vintage car up the hill, while Pete Candy’s Riley Falcon special ‘The Rat’ was the quickest sportscar.
