Limited fields entered the first international races to be held in Bucharest during the late 1930s. Hans Ruesch, a competent journeyman at best, defeated local driver Jean Calcianu by nearly a quarter of an hour in the opening race! It was a new millennium before a major event was organised in the city again. A new clockwise street circuit that circled the Palace of the Parliament was used when the FIA GT and British Formula 3 championships visited in 2007 and 2008. Subsequent events in 2009 and 2011 were cancelled due to a lack of finance.
