New Formula 1 commercial rights holders Liberty Media saw an expanded race calendar as key to its return on investment in the early 2020s. A new race in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi was an early breakthrough and Hermann Tilke designed a part-permanent street circuit around the My Dinh national stadium. That included a main straight that was almost a mile long and featured successful sections of his designs at the Nürburgring and Sepang. This was completed in January 2020, but that year's inaugural Vietnamese Grand Prix was postponed, and then cancelled, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The race was omitted from the 2021 calendar when a prime mover in the project was called to account by the country’s authorities on unrelated matters, and the Hanoi Street Circuit remains unused.
