Racing at Innsbruck-Kranebitten airport on a 1.7kms layout that featured two straights and a hairpin on the main runway began on 15 October 1958. The Preis von Tirol included races for sports cars, GTs, and saloons, with Formula 2 added in 1960. Hans Herrmann’s works Porsche 718 dominated that F2 race, beating Wolfgang von Trips (Cooper T43-Climax) by 11.6sec. Jochen Rindt made his circuit racing debut at Innsbruck driving a Simca Montlhéry in 1961. The airport was expanded in 1962 in preparation for the forthcoming 1964 Winter Olympics, at which time a new 2.8kms layout using the service roads linking each end of the runway was adopted. Another F2 was part of the final meeting to be held at this temporary airfield circuit on 9 October 1977 although that was a strictly club affair with just five local starters.
