The first FIA Grade 1 circuit in Finland, the KymiRing opened 19 August 2019 with a five-year MotoGP contract secured for 2020 and beyond. However, the first two editions were lost to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 race was cancelled due to incomplete homologation work and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The developer had entered administration by that time as financial difficulties stymied building work on grandstands and a hotel. It changed ownership in 2024 with plans to revitalise the venture. The ambitious motorsport complex takes its name from the river valley in which it is sited.
