Western Australia was handed the Australian Grand Prix in 1951 as part of the state rotation that was in place at that time. Racing had been held on the streets of Narrogin in the remote Wheatbelt region of Western Australia since 1948. The original 2.2-mile course was doubled in length by adding a new section of country roads to the southeast of the town. An estimated 35,000 witnessed Warwick Pratley’s Ford V8 Special average 63.8 mph on the way to victory. Racing stopped at Narrogin following the Le Mans disaster of 1955.
