Construction of the half-mile Oglethorpe Speedway Park dirt track began in 1946 but was not completed due to the untimely death of owner Donald Brewster. Joe Blount acquired the unfinished project which finally opened for motorcycle races in March 1951. It twice held a round of what is now NASCAR’s Cup Series with Al Keller and Lee Petty, who lapped the field four times, successful in 1954 and 1955 respectively. The facility was purchased by the Stone family in 1977 who continued to operate OSP until its closure in November 2021.
