Timmelsjoch is the mountain pass that links the Ötztal and Passeier valleys in Austria and Italy respectively. It was opened to motorised transport on 7 July 1959 by the completion of the High Alpine Road which is only passable during summertime. It first staged a hillclimb in 1962 using 6.9 miles of the route that featured a 705-meter elevation change and some gravel sections. The saloon car class was included as a round of the European Touring Car Championship for the next two years although many of the regular protagonists did not compete.
