Termed “50 percent racing, and 50 percent fun” by its creator Captain Sherman “Red” Crise, the Nassau Speed Week in the Bahamas was an end-of-season highlight during the 1950s and ‘60s. The end-of-term atmosphere attracted the cream of European and American racers for a series of races and parties. The newly formed Bahamas Automobile Club chose the disused Royal Air Force training base at the Windsor Field as the rather unkempt venue for the first three years, with oil drums to mark the course. The event moved to Oakes Field in 1957 after the original venue was requisitioned to be New Providence Island’s airport.
