The Sporting Car Club of South Australia organised meetings for four years on the roads to the south of Woodside in the Adelaide Hills from its first meeting on 13 October 1947. Primarily for motorcycles, two handicap car races were included at each meeting, which concluded with the first Formula 1 race to be held in Australia on 8 October 1951. Reg Hunt’s Vincent Special led race one for Formula 2 cars from start-to-finish that day. Six cars started the main F1 event during which Stan Jones’s Maybach Special prevailed over Doug Whiteford (Lago-Talbot) in a three-lap sprint. Racing on public roads was banned in South Australia later that year so Woodside’s moment in the racing spotlight was brief.
