Mercedes‘s Kimi Antonelli took a surprising pole position for the Miami Grand Prix sprint race ahead of Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri.
The 18-year-old beat the McLaren driver by just 0.045s to secure the top spot ahead of tomorrow’s short race.
Piastri’s team-mate Lando Norris qualified in third ahead of Max Verstappen, while Antonelli’s stablemate George Russell had to settle for fifth.
Ferrari finished sixth and seventh, Charles Leclerc in front of Lewis Hamilton, while Alexander Albon was the quickest of the Williams drivers in eighth.
The top 10 was completed by Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) and Aston Martin‘s Fernando Alonso.
Sauber driver Nico Hülkenberg qualified 11th ahead of the Haas of Esteban Ocon.
Alpine‘s Pierre Gasly finished in 13th after losing time when he brushed the wall on his final flying run in SQ2. The Frenchman will start ahead of Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson, 14th, and Williams‘ Carlos Sainz, the Spaniard’s sole laptime being deleted for a track-limits infraction at Turn 15.
Lance Stroll endured yet another poor qualifying session and was knocked out in SQ1 in 16th position, ahead of the Alpine of Jack Doohan.
Red Bull‘s Yuki Tsunoda and Haas driver Ollie Bearman also failed to advance after they both left their garages too late to start their final laps before time ran out.
Tsunoda finished down in 18th and Bearman was last, the duo split by the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto.
