Public opinion polls sponsored by the Motor Accessories Manufacturers’ Association reveal a consistent opposition among motorists to the “tied garage” policy introduced by petrol companies. The most recent of three polls indicates that 82 per cent. of motorists prefer a free choice of petrol at service stations and 82 per cent. prefer a free choice of motor oils. A striking fact emerged in answer to one question in the latest poll: 58 per cent. of motorists said they would take their custom elsewhere if their usual garage ceased to stock their favourite motor oil.
