Historic 91 -- Alfa Romeo

Historic Alfa Roadsports

Scuderia Dooley, as the Brookside Alfas are often known, have gradually begun to populate the HSCC Road Sports and Novices Championships. But the first creation was the very well run Giulietta Saloon of Richard Ward who cleaned up a number of Classic Saloon Championships up to 1988. The car’s sole appearance in 1990 was at the Christies’ meeting in the European Championship event where the car showed well amongst the massed ranks of the Scuderia del Portello, coming away with a class win.

Most frequent photo was American Jeff Hicks in a late Giulietta SV who just came away with the 1300cc Novices Championships from a bunch of Lancia Fulvias and a screaming Honda S800, after a series of often hectic struggles. Real class was added from time to time by Carol Spagg’s Giulietta SZ that probably suffered from being worth as much as the rest of the field.

II Padrone, Jon Dooley, ventured out a couple of times in the Hicks Giulietta in Road Sports, carrying off an opposition free 1300 class each time but running well overall.

Scuderia graduates Bill Croxson (Giulia Spider Veloce) and Adrian Hall (2600 Spider) refused to let tyre size handicapping get in the way of la bella figura. Adrian, fresh from setting a momentary outright lap record at Cadwell (due to computer error), foxed the handicappers completely and achieved a rare outright win later the same day. Bill Croxson was overcome by the well tyred and well driven Fulvia of composer Simon Park but at least got his own back by taking Simon with him on the Coppa d’Italia. Simon said he enjoyed it a lot..

Plans for 1991 include a pair of Giulietta SV’s for novices Kit Stewart and Nick Savage, a visit to the Giro dell’Umbria for the Spagg/Dooley combo in the SZ, outings for the Giulietta TI of Ward/Dooley in the European Historic Saloon Championship, hopefully within Scuderia del Portello and, if there’s anything left, a wild ride across Mexico in the Carrera on November. They are also working on 1900’s and 2600’s but they will take longer.

As a bonus these nicely set up Giuliettas and Giulias are such fun on the road to and from the races with nimbleness and so much go.
