Baron Huschke von Hanstein

Sir,

We write in memory of Huschke von Hanstein, who passed away in March.

We met him 35 years ago when he was Europe’s most famous “Rennieiter” and we had been good friends ever since. His character and personality were as unique as his famous name. It is in large part due to him that Porsche acquired its very special image and became so well known in its early years when he led a small and enthusiastic racing team to victories all over the world. Multilingual, witty and full of energy and love for automobile racing, he became the most famous international Porsche figure of his time.

We were in awe of his mental and physical toughness, we admired his charm and his style, and we were touched on many occasions by his soft and brave heart which he hid so well under his stylish English tweed jackets. He was a big part of our youth and a big part of our lives because without him the two of us would never have met. Thank you Huschke, we loved you, red socks and all.
