Details matter.

Alfa Romeo’s new car features the famous emblem of a snake and man next to the cross of Milan. The team tell us this represents not the man being eaten, but being reborn. Just as Alfa itself is reborn in F1 (see our 2019 season preview on page 66). The detailing on the new Alfa C38 also tells of the team’s big budget aero operation. Shown here is the large vertical board on which the badge is imprinted. It keeps the airflow arriving from the barge boards separate from the flow coming from the front tyres. It is essential to keep those two from interfering, as the speed of the air down the body sides enhances the speed of the underbody airflow and thereby increases downforce. It is these tiny intricacies that can define success or failure and would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago when the team existed on the margins of survival as Sauber.
