Oldest-bike

Reputed to be the world’s first series production motorcycle, the H&W from 1894, featured in our auctions round-up on page 138, is a genuine piece of history. With no real precedents to build on, it’s a rare example of a crank-driven machine, borrowing a well-established principle from existing steam locomotives. With no clutch it needed a push-and-jump-on start. Despite producing only 2.5bhp at 240rpm, the H&W was capable of speeds approaching 30mph – with one single spoon brake.
