French Grand Prix

The French Grand Prix returned to Dijon Prenois on July 3rd and featured a tremendous battle for the lead between John Watson's Brabham BT45B (No. 7, above) and Mario Andretti's Lotus 78 (No.5). Andretti won after Watson's car ran out of petrol on the last lap. Left, Carlos Reutemann's sixth placed Ferrari leads the Tyrrell P34s of Patrick Depailler and Ronnie Peterson. Centre right, James Hunt's McLaren M26 (No. 1) comes up to lap the Copersucar of Emerson Fittipaldi and the March of Ian Scheckter. Far right, top, Reutemann't Ferrari (No. 12) collides with Jochen Mass' McLaren on the opening lap, but gets away with the incident in a shower of sparks. Alan Jones' Shadow DN8 (No. 17) chased Scheckter hard until sidelined with a broken drive-shaft. Bottom right, Stuck's Brabham holds up Laffite's Ligier, even though the German driver is about to be lapped. Below, Andretti takes a keen interest as one "corner" of his Lotus 78 is weighed at Dijon.
