Across Australia by sun beams

BP has announced that it is to sponsor a trans-continental chal lenge in November 1987. Competitors will be required to drive the 2000 miles from Darwin to Adelaide in vehicles powered by solar energy. The event coincides with the 80th anniversary of the first attempted trans-Australian crossing between the two towns which was under-taken by H.H. Dutton and Murray Aunger in a 20 HP Talbot. That attempt failed but the two men were successful the following year in another Talbot Modern roads have cut the 3,500 mile journey of the pioneers down to the present 2,000 miles.

Alfa Romeo F1 return

Alfa Romeo has announced that it is to return to F1 by supplying engines to Ligier for a three year period. These are to be straight four all-alloy turbocharged units of 14990c bearing the designation 41,85/T.

Alfa Romeo is at pains to stress that it is entering a full technical collaboration with Ligier and from 1987 the learn will be called ‘Ligier-Alfa Romeo’.

Alfa Romeo engines are currently used by Osella but without official works collaboration.
