‘Fastest on Earth’

Latest step in the Brooklands Museum’s steady progress is the Speed Record exhibition opened by Prince Michael at the end of lune. Private and company sponsors and the Museums and Galleries Commission produced the £300,000 to refurbish the ERA Shed, and create displays illustrating Edge’s 1907 solo 24-hr run (the huge chassis and engine are on show) and the Campbell and Cobb achievements. Cars in residence include the Lap Record Holder Sunbeam Tiger, 1912 Lorraine-Dietrich Vieux Charles III, and Ettore’s own Brescia Bugatti. With dramatic graphics, models and artifacts it’s an impressive addition — even if rain coming though the roof on my visit did add weight to the Museum’s imminent request for Lottery funding. G C
