Before the outlandish prototypes took centre stage, GT1 machinery starred at La Sarthe following an influx of manufacturers including Porsche, Nissan, Panoz and Toyota. Here, the Toyota GT-One of Martin Brundle/ Emmanuel Collard/Eric Hélary speeds by with brakes glowing and exhaust ablaze. The car was quick, but wasn’t a match for Porsche’s 911 GT1-98. The lead Toyota managed ninth that year.
