A huge grid of 59 MGBs turned out for the 60th anniversary event

The recent MG Live! event at Silverstone in June featured a special celebratory race to mark the 60th anniversary of one of the brand’s most-loved models, the MGB.

The MG Car Club partnered with Equipe Classic Racing to help stage the special Equipe MGB60 race, which was held on the full 3.2-mile Grand Prix Circuit. The original intention was to gather a grid of 60 race-spec MGBs of all shapes and sizes, all running to FIA appendix K regulations and on Dunlop historic tyres for a 40-minute pitstop race.

The club came agonisingly close to its target, too, with 59 cars turning out for the race, comprised of 57 Roadsters, a single B GT and even a rare WSM. The race turned out to be a bit of a thriller, too, with Sam Kirkpatrick taking the overall glory just 2.5sec clear of Tom Smith’s Roadster, with Dominic Mooney coming home third. Of the 59 starters, 53 made it to the flag.
