Will actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney (left) sprinkle some Hollywood stardust on to the Alpine Formula 1 team and boost its bid to become a world title contender? That’s the hope following a deal that has led the pair to invest in the Renault-owned midfielder.

The duo have catapulted Wrexham AFC back into league football, a story that has captured global attention through their Welcome to Wrexham documentary series. Now the sports fans, through their Maximum Efforts group that includes fellow actor Michael B Jordan, have joined forces with two other investment companies to buy a 24% €200m (£172m) stake in the Enstone-based F1 squad.

Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said the deal should increase revenues to “help us indirectly continue on our plan” to fight for F1 world titles. “They know how to do things we are not able to do,” added Luca de Meo, CEO of Alpine’s parent company, Renault Group.
