Bomberg marks Porsche Club GB’s 65th anniversary with a limited-edition chronograph

Bomberg’s association with motor sport has grown through racing partnerships and support for competitors, but its latest collaboration celebrates a different kind of automotive enthusiasm, with a limited-edition Racing Carbon chronograph marking 65 years of the Porsche Club of Great Britain

Bomberg began in 2012 at the height of the modern-day watchmaking renaissance, when big, bold and brash was the order of the day. It was founded by the flamboyant Rick De La Croix, a veteran watch distributor who introduced Hublot to North and South America when its ostentatious Big Bang models were all the rage. Bomberg aimed to bring an extra edge to horology with rock’n’roll, skull and tattoo-themed models and a signature piece called the Bolt-68.

Measuring an imposing of-the-era 45mm in diameter, the Bolt’s unique selling point was its patented bayonet strap fitting system that enabled the watch to be quickly converted from being wrist-worn to pocket watch, pendant watch or, even, desk clock.

The Bolt and its derivatives remain popular, and much of the original Bomberg style survives in the brand’s Heritage Classic and Heritage Iconics lines. But, these days, the dial name is probably better known for its associations with the automotive world than it is with being a horological disruptor.

That recognition has come about as a result of Bomberg’s numerous sponsorship programmes, which include backing the 24H Series as official timing partner and supporting the Radical Cup Europe.

Bomberg is also the official watch of the Colorado MotorSport off-road racing team (which competes in the Baja 1000 and Dakar Rally, as well as making regular appearances at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb), while drivers supported by the brand include GT4 European Series competitor Ruben del Sarte and Italian GT endurance champ Riccardo Ianniello.

And this year, Bomberg was called upon in its role of watch partner to the Porsche Club of Great Britain (PCGB) to create a special chronograph to celebrate the organisation’s 65th anniversary.

Based on the brand’s Racing Carbon model, the watch is limited to 100 examples and features a blue and red dial in woven carbon fibre depicting the PCGB’s distinctive logo, complete with a golden Porsche Crest applied between seven and eight o’clock and gold-finished numerals in the six and five positions.

As with all Racing Carbon watches, it follows the ‘bullhead’ format (winding crown and pushers at the top, rather than at the side) with the characteristic stop/start lever finished in anodised red.

Turn the watch over, meanwhile, and you’ll find an engraving of the PCGB logo together with the anniversary dates and the relevant edition number of the piece – which, since it’s based on the Bolt-68 design, can be transformed from wrist to pocket to pendant to desk clock. Each timepiece is supplied with two perforated silicone straps (one black, one white, with contrasting racing stripe) and is delivered in celebratory PCGB 65th anniversary packaging.
