Michael Schumacher’s 1998 Ferrari race suit leads a packed autumn auction calendar
With traditional classics struggling to hold their value, the autumn auction calendar offers a varied picture of the collector-car market, from Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari memorabilia and a long-hidden veteran-car collection to restored Land Rovers and rare modern supercars
RM Sotheby’s
2014 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse
Sold by RM Sotheby’s, £4.1M
This Veyron was one of three cars built to kick-off the Legends series of limited editions that paid tribute to famous Bugatti drivers of the past. Honouring Jean-Pierre Wimille, who raced the mighty Type 57G Tank to the marque’s first Le Mans win in 1937, the car combined the Tank’s light blue paint with dark blue carbon fibre. Other special touches included a diagram of the Le Mans circuit, Wimille’s portrait and signature, Bugatti’s elephant symbol and French flag motifs. Originally sold to Dubai, the 1200bhp car later had German and Swiss owners, covering fewer than 2500 miles.
WB & Sons
1969 Citroën DS Safari
Sold by WB & Sons, £10,628
Citroën’s DS still looks futuristic, with the rare Safari being among the most covetable of the lot. This seven-seater was brought to Britain five years ago after spending most of its life in sunny South Africa.
Dore & Rees
1955 Jaguar XK140
Sold by Dore & Rees, £17,500
Bargain of the month? This delightfully unrestored XK140 had been in the ownership of just three people from new, with the vendor having acquired it 11 years ago. It appeared to need little work.
RM Sotheby’s
2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet
Sold by RM Sotheby’s, £520,000
Belgian gaming tycoon and car collector Willy Michiels amassed close to 100 mostly run-of-the mill classics – meaning this Designo Mystic White G-Wagen Landaulet stood out. One of 99 made.
Broad Arrow
1978 Porsche 924
Sold by Broad Arrow, £24,500
This 924 was built as a tribute to Porsche’s efforts with the model in events such as the Safari Rally Kenya and the Repco Reliability Trial, both of 1979. The car had been jacked-up and stripped-out.
Bonhams
1998 Scuderia Ferrari Race Suit
Sold by Bonhams, £35,370
Not any old race suit, but the one worn by Michael Schumacher to contest the 1998 San Marino GP at Imola. Schumacher qualified third and finished second in the race – despite Ferrari adopting the short-lived side wings that were banned the next day.
WB & Sons
1963 MG B Roadster
Sold by Wb & Sons, £6540
The market for traditional classics really is in the doldrums. Although it had been nicely restored and in the vendor’s ownership for 37 years, this honest B fetched less than half the cost of a new bodyshell.
Bonhams
1950 Land Rover Series 1
Sold by Bonhams, £58,650
This was one of the meticulous Land Rover restorations carried out by JLR’s Reborn programme. Completed in 2017, the RAF Blue Series 1 had covered only 600 miles since – and likely sold for considerably less than the cost of the rebuild.
Forthcoming Sale Highlights
● Bonhams, London, October 30
Bonhams stages its annual Golden Age of Motoring auction right before the celebrated London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. This year’s highlights are the seven cars that made up the so-called Somerset Hoard, none of which has seen the light of day since being stored away before WWII. A 1904 Darracq 10hp could be the star – tipped to realise more than £150,000.
● Broad Arrow, Las Vegas, October 31
Coinciding with the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas, this sale is set to reinforce the fact that the US leads the way when it comes to the sale of seriously big money cars. Among the stars of this show will be a 2003 Ferrari Enzo with an estimate of £4.9m-£6.5m, a £1.7m Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and a £1.5m Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing.
● Gooding Christie’s, Geneva, November 8
This inaugural Geneva sale will offer a veritable feast for lovers of modern Ferraris, especially those who like 12-cylinder models. Choose from a 2016 F12tdf, a 2023 812 Competizione Aperta and a 2025 12Cilindri Spider (to name but three). Most extreme of the lot will be a 1000bhp, 200mph SF90 XX Spider from 2025. It’s one of only 599 built.
● RM Sotheby’s, Munich, November 20
This will be the fifth edition of the RM Sotheby’s Munich sale and will again take place at the city’s Motorworld ‘automotive experience’ centre. Expect some more potty prices for Porsche 911s, not least a unique 1993 RS 3.8 which is believed to be the only one to have been factory-fitted with rear seats. A one-owner car, it’s estimated is £950,000-£1.1m.
