Mistaken Identity!

Sir,

In your report on the Mitsubishi Colt in the December 1977 Motor Sport, you pointed out that the Colt you were driving suddenly declared itself to be a “Gal”.

This is a further example of badge engineering since in many markets this same car is sold as a “Galant”, not a “Colt”. In fact some years ago when Ford (USA) was marketing the Mustang they had plans for a smaller Mustang which they hoped to call “Colt” only to find the name “belonged to” Mitsubishi.

In Britain Honda market a motorcycle called “Dream” which in other markets is called “Hawk”, and DKW-Hercules market Hercules motorcycles in Germany and DKW in the U.K…. must be all to do with names of previous products (Humbers and pedal cycles!)

You no doubt know that the belt-driven Volvo 343 will soon be available with the Volkswagen Golf Diesel engine surely a car fulfilling all requirements.

Motor Sport continues to stand out head and shoulders above the rest wonderful monthly reading.
