TT races remembered with Ards memorial

Last August a fine memorial of polished black granite weighing 1¼ tons was unveiled by the Mayor of Ards, Jim Fletcher, to commemorate the famous TT sports car races held in Ireland from 1928 to 1936. This fine tribute to all those who made these memorable races possible was commissioned by the Ulster VCC, supported by Ards Borough, and it stands in Conway Square, Newtonards. The names of all the race winners and of those killed in the races are engraved on the memorial.

During the ceremony the actual Lea-Francis with which Kaye Don won the first race was there, having been driven from the Coventry Museum of Transport, which also loaned a copy of the menu from the 1928 celebration dinner, signed by the drivers, mechanics, organisers etc.
