WAR: Private motorists in London issued, by the R.A.C. alone, with extra coupons for over a million gallons of petrol for the emergency transport scheme. Thousands of volunteer motorists paid for extra petrol to operate the “Lifts for Service Men” leave-transport scheme.

PEACE: Mr. Gaitskill refused to allow those still in possession of “basic” petrol to use it at Christmas for family reunions, etc.
