Sprite appeal

Sir,

I read with interest your feature Sprites and Gremlins (November 1999), about racing the ex-Pat Moss/Paul Hawkins Sebring Sprite, at this year’s Goodwood IT celebration race. May I pass on my heartfelt commiserations on its retirement.

Doubtless you are aware this car was one of six near-identical models, built by Williams & Pritchard Limited for the redoubtable John Sprinzel at the beginning of the 1961 season. Following the unveiling of a ‘prototype’ at the ’61 Racing Car Show, an additional five cars were constructed and campaigned by Ian Walker, Andrew Hedges, David Siegle-Morris, the aforementioned Paul Hawkins and, of course, John Sprinzel.

Of the five W&P alloy coupes, four are known to survive. David Siegle-Morris’ Sebring disappeared during 1962, following a brief spell in Roger Mac’s ownership. The Andrew Hedges car, registered 410 EAO, is undergoing restoration by myself following its recent discovery in poor condition. Andrew raced EAO for the whole of the ’61 season, here and on the continent. Main events included the Niirburgring 1000km, the Autosport 3-Hours at Snetterton and 1000km at Montlhery.

I would love to hear from anyone who can offer help, in the way of photographs, information etc to assist with the rebuild. I can be contacted on 01922 458429.
