Three up for M23

The ex-Denny Hulme McLaren M23 has returned to racing in New Zealand after spending a decade in a motor museum in the Kiwi’s hometown of Te Puke.

Hulme won the 1973 Swedish Grand Prix in the chassis, which was the first M23 built. When he retired from Formula One he bought the car from McLaren and shipped it home.

New owner Phil Mauger bought the car from Hulme’s widow Greta, and she was on hand when it raced at Manfeild in November after a full rebuild.

“You’re sitting there and thinking that only two other people have ever driven this car, Denny Hulme and Mike Hailwood,” said Mauger. “So it was special. Very, very special.”
