Endurance is Gary Watkins’ forte he’s been reporting on spots car and particularly long-distance racing since mammoths roamed the tundra. But 2012 was the first season he’s had an endurance World Championship to write about. Very appropriate, then, that this month he dug deep into the origins and spectacular success of the last British sports car to collect such a world title, the Jaguar XJR-14, championship winner back in 1991.

We reckon there’s a secret theme in every issue of this magazine a subject that hasn’t been mentioned for months suddenly crops up in three places at once. This time it’s the name Chineffi, sparked by Richard Heseltine’s amusing interview with ‘Coco’ of that ilk. Some subjects need a bit of coaxing, but not the talkative and enthusiastic Luigi Jr. Heseltine is now dining out on the stories he had to cut from this piece… Sadly we’re too stingy to give prizes for spotting the other theme links inside.

You might think ‘Ice Man’ Kimi was a hard interview, but when our Fl newshound Adam Cooper got the World Champion racer and rallyman alone, the normally cut Scandinavian spoke openly about his return to the top rank and the top podium step and why small-scale Lotus suits him better than high-gloss McLaren.

Finally, Ed Foster, our very own transport extravaganza. He’s baled out his boat, bored out his bike and biffed his knee yumping a borrowed BSA, yet still made it to Kent to watch some of tomorrow’s hopefuls in the Henry Surtees Challenge. Plus fitting in a quick shotgun lap of the ‘Ring and he’s cleaned the office Lotus. No-one knew its wheels were silver…
