Ash Sutton dreams of records after BTCC triple

Ash Sutton holds BTCC trophy after his third championship win

It’s a third BTCC title for Ash Sutton, who, at 27, has time on his side to collect more

At just 27, newly crowned triple British Touring Car champion Ash Sutton has the potential to rewrite history in domestic tin-top racing, starting with his charge to equal series greats Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington.

Sutton successfully defended his BTCC crown during the recent season finale at Brands Hatch, bringing his championship tally to three from the last five seasons. Sutton’s first breakthrough came with Subaru in 2017, before his double with the Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50 team.

With three titles to his name, Sutton lies just one short of the only two drivers to ever reach a quadruple of BTCC honours – Rouse and Turkington – and very much has time on his side.

“We’re one step closer to where we want to be… I want to go down as one of the BTCC greats and if that means going after more championships, then that’s what we’re going to do,” Sutton said. “If I can beat Colin to five titles, then I’ll be really happy. The ultimate goal is getting the most championships.”

Sutton capped his season with his 24th career win in the last race in Kent, meaning he still has some way to go until he can hope to match Jason Plato’s record of 97 BTCC wins. Likewise, his 177 race starts falls some way short of Matt Neal’s incredible 719.

Still, you wouldn’t bet against Sutton on current form.
